Long slow day at work so I've been on the interweb looking for interesting trivia and ran across this old thread from StoppingPower.net. One of their moderators chronographed a couple of .357mag loads out of a 640 and several 9mm loads out of a 940 for comparison. The 9mm velocities are pretty impressive, close to the .357mag and waaaayyy ahead of most .38spl's.

Here's the link to the page- http://www.stoppingpower.net/f...archTerms=9mm,snubby

We had a UFO today... I finally determined it was the sun, which has not been known in these parts for a while (think I will go back to killing every ground hog I see!).

In any case I ventured out this afternoon to partially follow up on a topic I promised - the comparison of the .357 and 9mm in 2" J-frames.

First the .357 640 (which is actually 2 1/8" of course):

125gr. Remington Factory JHP = 1231 fps
145gr. Winchester Silver Tip = 1149 fps

Now the 9mm 940 1 7/8"

115gr. Win. Ball = 976 fps
124gr. Speer G-D +P = 1105 fps
124gr. Fed +P ExFMJ = 1085 fps
127gr. Win. +P+ Ranger= 1198 fps
147gr. Fed H-S = 947 fps
147gr. Win Black Talon = 940 fps

I'll say this - the Win. 127 is roughly equal to the Remington 125 gr .357 (though I think the latter may expand more becuase of design) but there is no comparison in recoil, blast and flash - the 127 9mm behaves about like the +P 38 in the snubby.

Well there it is for what it's worth.

Take care,
Jim H.

Did some testing awhile back with my model 640 and the Federal 110 gr. JHP Classic and CorBon 110 gr. JHP loads seemed fair easy to control with follow-up shots. The 125 gr. JHP loads shake hands with ya a little more.

Well, since it kicks so much, I think I will stay with my Smith M640, old model, in .38 special an 158gr Corbon LSWHPs. I've shot a 2 inch Ruger SP101 in .357, and they are pretty hard on you. Still, that Smith in 9mm shows how efficient the cartridge is in that little tube, while the .357 shows how inefficient it is.

I wonder... if part of the reason the .357 kicks so much is that it is heaving not only the bullet, but allot of the gunpower to (going out of the barrel) while the 9mm burns most of it up.

Jim,

Those results are very interesting. I've owned both, currently use the 640. I guess I didn't realize the actual velocities were as close as they are. I see now that maybe I should have given my 940 more of a chance. It's recoil wasn't quite as harsh as my .357.

Deaf Smith, I can't fault that logic. I think also you may be correct on the reason.

I did not mention this but I have clocked various lots of the Cor-Bon +P+ (which is now discontinued) from a 2" 642. One lot went 800 fps but another lot clocked 1005 fps.

Jim,

Was the Cor-Bon 158 LSWHPs giving THAT kind of spread? If so, Wow! A 1000 fps from that little tube reminds me of Jeff Cooper writeing about hot loading a chiefs to get a 158 at 1000 fps. Sure wish they could make it a bit more consistant in velocity. I would like a 1000 fps load with that weight. Then my 2 inch M64 would be interesting.

I should have made clear that these were two totlly different lots of Cor-Bon 158 +P+ LSWCHP (I did however purchase both boxes at the same store a few weeks apart but I think one had been there a while).

While we don't list loads here, one of those Jeff lists in his book is *very* consistent and accurate but the lot to lot variation in the powder can case problems in one lot I use a whole grain more than another lot and if one happened to get the "fast" lot loaded with the "slow lot" data problems might ensue! That is why I don't give out load data.

As an adjunct the load he lists for the 9mm, with a 124gr Speer JSP actually goes 1350 from my Browning - but it did not work so well on vermin (didn't expand) - if you drill the point with a #2 center drill then it is spectacular! I guess one could substitute a modern JHP but I would warn that any change requires working up.

Onward!

Preasure is what drives bullets out the bore. As it happens, Industry max preasures for the 9MM and the .357 are exactly the same, 35000 PSI, so it shouldn't be too much of a surprise the velocities are close to the same in a short barrel. In a longer barrel, the larger powder capacity of the .357 would start making a big difference, but with a two inch tube I wouldn't expect much difference with similar weight bullets at max pressure.

I know I may be old-fashioned, but I carry a Ruger 2 3/4" Security Six with Federal 124 gr JHP. Any comments about this combination?

That is why you get more recoil and muzzel flash from the 357. Thats where the excess powder goes. The barrel isn't long enough for the powder to burn up before it exits. You turn a 357 into a 38 by haveing that short of a barrel. It would be interesting to see the same test with a 3".

I guess these results prove the efficiency of the 9mm over the .38spl and .357mag in short barreled guns.

I used to have a 9mm Taurus 2'' snubbie revolver and Blazer aluminum averaged 1,122fps out of it. Quite impressive I thought.

It has always been my understanding the 9mm loses less velocity in a short barrel due to the types of powders they are loaded with. With modern expanding bullet designs, they should be more effective than a similar .38 loading, but not quite as punishing on the shooter as a .357. I always wanted a 3-inch 547 for this reason, and to share ammo with my M9A1, but they have gotten too expensive these days. Maybe I'll get lucky some day. ezb

WC,
I saw the same topic and was surprised by the results. Not much loss of velocity for a 9mm fired from a 2 inch revolver as compared to a 3.5 inch auto.
BTW, still waiting for my cylinder to come back from TK Custom. Now that I've actually started the conversion process, I see more and more threads on 9mm revolvers. It's reassuring to see that I made good decision.
