Picked up a nice 696 no-dash this past weekend at the Tucson gun show. I have a few questions about ammo.

Is it the high velocity loads that cause the dreaded cracked forcing cone?

For self defence loads, would Winchester 200 gr. Silvertips or Speer 200 gr. Gold Dots be OK?

Being that I handload, I'll be loading up some lead semi-wadcutters or lead roundnose flat points ( I have to check to see what I have on hand ) for practice. What velocity should I load those to?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Frank

1. Possibly
2. I use Silvertips exclusively for defense.

3. LSWC 200 gr or WC 208 gr. cast. i use RCBS for the former and Lee for the latter
800 -900 fps.

Also consider adding a crimson trace laser grip.

I'm quite sure that a 200-240 grain lead slug at 900 fps will do the job defense-wise!
