Picked up a TRR8 that I've wanted for a long time, but I can't stand the hammer design.

Can I swap it out for a case hardened target hammer and trigger and is there anything I need to watch out for?

Thank you.

There's nothing wrong with MIM parts.

The TRR8 hammer is relieved for the internal lock and works with a frame mounted firing pin. Most older case hardened hammers you see for sale have a hammer nose and won't work in your gun.

You'd need to find an older Performance Center hammer that's forged/hardened/flash chromed and accommodates the IL, but I'm not sure S&W even made them.

I finally got an R8 after years of wanting one. It might be the last revolver I'd give up, but it came with a horrible action. I polished away, changed springs, etc. to no avail. I eventually installed a TK Custom Diamond Speed hammer. It's been pretty great for 6K rounds or so. To stay reliable with CCI primers, I had a choice of lengthening the strain screw or installing a Wilson Combat action kit. With the WC kit, it's reliable with all primers, and has a shorter, lighter and more even trigger stroke. TK makes a DA hammer as well that probly wouldn't require the additional tinkering to perfect it.

I agree that MIM in and of itself is not the devil, but my hammer that happened to have been MIM coulda been a candidate.

Since the ole topic of MIM is a part of this, I thought I'd share the best article I've ever read on it. It's a fairly lengthy read, so favorite beverage is suggested before embarking.
