Default What's your favorite model and why?

Just thought it would be fun/interesting to discuss some different options and perspectives...and of course see some pics

Mine is the 3" 686 plus...while certainly not ideal for some specific uses, IMHO it's a great balance between size, capacity, ballistics, durability, etc.

Impossible question, how could anyone pick a favorite. Kind of like asking which of your kids/grandkids is your favorite. So many answers to what seems a simple question. Here's one of my favorites, let's say my favorite 44 from the 1930s; 3rd Model HE 44 Wolf & Klar.

Or perhaps you meant in the 1980 to Present section in which case one of them would be this 617-6 Mountain Gun.

And why favorites, for both of these due to relatively few of them being available.

It's hard to say. Some I like for their body and others I like for their looks. There are just so many beautiful models out there!

That's understandable, especially considering some of the impressive collections I've seen...we can certainly make it plural...favorite(s).

As Jeff hinted -- if you mean for this era my favorite 3" Chiefs Special is the 1984 Jovino Special Model 60 square butt.

Great looks, great balance and a bit of an oddball, like me.

No rules/conditions to participate...it's been too cold for the range, I'm bored, and thought it would be an interesting discussion... just trying to get folks to think a bit about which are their favorite(s) and why.

I have to echo 22hipower's sentiments. I love my 2 K38s (14-- and a 14-3), but I also love my 36-6 and the 57, just to name a few! Honestly, I'd never willingly part with any of my S&Ws!

I like a lot of S&W revolvers so a favorite is tough to narrow down. Over the years I have probably owned 100+ S&W’s and I can honestly say my favorite is my 2” model 34-1 22LR square butt. I have always liked the looks of that tall shark fin sight for some unknown reason, and like 22’s. In all S&W’s I think the square butt gives it a more classic style than round, and I like how they feel when shooting.
Aside from aesthetics ( the only mark against the gun is it being nickel instead of blue) this particular 34-1 has the best J frame trigger I have ever felt, regardless of caliber and unlike a lot of S&W 22’s it chambers and ejects effortlessly with none of the tight chamber issues seen so frequently.
At defensive speed, 7 yard groups of 6 shots can be covered with a nickel and my club has a 1/2 size uspsa steel silhouette set up at 65 yards. Hitting it 6/6 all day long is easy.
Both appearance and function definitely my favorite

My model 57 that was Dad's deer gun.

My club's indoor range did a $$$ upgrade last year, and anything "magnum" is now not permitted.

Thanks to Starline brass for making .41 Special brass.

I highly agree with the 3 inch 686! Another great choice that I think looks proportionally balanced is a 2 1/2 inch Model 10. Unfortunately, I donít own oneÖ.yet!

The 5 shot, no one cheats at the card table, M460 Carry.
Not sure if the "Carry" is for the gun or the cheat's
removal.

My gut reaction when I saw the title was ... my 6906, of course!

In keeping with the theme of the section, however, I'll say my 6" 686-4 plus. With that long barrel and full lug I can shoot offhand all afternoon and not get tired.

The 4inch Model 19 is my favorite S&W revolver. I prefer the dash-2 versions, both because I was made in that time period and also the workmanship displayed by them. They are the perfect balance between cartridge power and size/weight for me.

In 1980-Present wheelguns, I only own a few, and I almost went with my almost-pristine 6" M19-5. Then I remembered a gun that I, frankly, don't normally think about when I ponder my S&W collection, and that is my M69. This 4-1/4" L-frame .44 Mag lives it's life quietly, patiently, hanging in a holster, out-of-sight but not out-of-reach near my kitchen door, loaded with 200 grain Hornady XTPs on top of a .44 Spl +P charge of Titegroup. With this load, I can ding a 10" steel gong offhand pretty much on demand at 50 yards. To be honest, I've never needed it for anything beyond practice, but it's there if I need it.

I agree that having a favorite is a near impossible task to preform, and I have contemplated over this question for years. The answer is............. probably my 4" 57 today.

Smile Hills Carry

Whatís your favorite S&W model and why?
All my S&Ws are my favorites. Honorable
mention is my Mountain Guns.

The Mountain Guns just have great balance
between aesthetic looks, size, capacity,
durability, and power. One is always picked
for a day carry during hunting seasons,
back country fly fishing, or chores.

When you say "favorite," Model 042 comes to mind. I prefer the J Frame centennials for carry and the 042 is stunning. It is also sort of an oddball. It's not a cataloged model, made to cover perceived finish problems in model 642, etc.

Gotta go with my M57. My grandfather left me two M58s, that made me fall in love with .41 Mag, but I like the sights on the 57.

Really hard to choose, My first was a 14-2 I bought myself as a graduation present for pharmacy school back in 1968. I then shot a combat masterpiece as handgun qualification in USAF OCS abut a year later, I liked the balance of it a lot. Then in late 69 I picked up a 17-2, and honestly for shooters that was it for a long time. I did get a couple of stainless, fixed rear sight .357mag models, one a 3" the other a 4", one was for my son going off to law school in another state. When my father died I ended up with his 4" model 10, and then I got a M29 and a 629 Classic Hunter, unfluted cylinder and factory ported barrel. A few years back I got a plain hand ejector in 32-20 as a companion gun for a little Marlin 1894CL in that caliber, Then a couple of weeks ago I was in a shop and spotted what looked like a combat masterpiece, but it was a .22LR, turned out to be a model 18 so I made a deal on it, and ordered and finally received a model 48, .22wmr.

I would say my two K models but have yet to shoot the M 18 and think it might take top billing if it shoots good.

I almost forgot I did get a 342, one of the Ti Lite models, double action only for pocket carry, but it is just a little too large to conceal unless you have big deep pockets. Plus it is so light at I think under 11 oz that it plain hurts to shoot even with standard 38 special loads, so it is at the bottom of the list for favorites.

My favorite revolver is a Model 19-4. I carried that gun for more than 24 years on the job. A sweet gun with a fine trigger!

Model 65-4. Six months in police academy worth of clean shine and polish and a few years on my belt makes it have a warm feeling in my heart.

Don't have a favorite of my 8 S&W revolvers, limited to one, a toss up between my 4" nickeled M-27 with its polished action and my 6" M-28.

I suppose if I had to pick one it would be my 6" 686 no dash that I bought brand new about 40 years ago.
The one I've had the most fun putting together is my 8" model 10/14/15/19/66 Frankensmith I put together last year.

It's really hard to pick a favorite, but it's probably my 6" M57. Why? Because it's not a M29, but looks just like one, and it's a caliber that sort of failed to inspire, but seems to have an underground fan club.

A close second is probably my 7" M41, it's the sexiest .22LR semiauto out there.

Please don't tell my other S&W's I didn't pick them, I don't want to bruise their egos.

Some favorite S&W revolvers:

In .357, I want a 6-inch Model 28-2, itís a brute and exactly what I want for full-nuts 158gr JSP handloads. This one here is from 1966 and it needed me and I was thrilled to bring it in to the fold to live out itís dream of belching fireballs:

I just think that 28ís are some of the greatest wheelguns that S&W ever churned out. Nothing fancy but with all of the horsepower. If that shiny Model 27 is your GTO then this beast is my Pontiac Tempest and itís as capable as it is unassuming.

Overall, no revolver made anywhere or any time by anyone feels better or more natural in my hands than a 4-inch square butt heavy barrel Model 10 or 64. I shoot all of mine exclusively in double action and I mean 100% of the time. One of my favorites is this one made in 1969 for the Toledo Police Department:

I think Iím fortunate to have found it. I have a funny story about this one that I have detailed before, always makes me smile.

If I were forced in some total nightmare scenario where I was only allowed to keep ONE of my revolversÖ it might very well end up being this custom PPC machine built by the legendary Travis Strahan on a Model 64:

There is only ONE thing about this revolver that I will never understandÖ

The guy at the gun show that sold this to meÖ what on Earth was he thinking?! Why would any rational person sell this?

2.5" 686+ that's a work in progress. Will be adding fixed rear combat sights, front night sight, removing the lock, having the cylinder cut for moon clips, adding an extended cylinder release, changing the grips, and replace some of the MIM parts with TK Customs forged parts. It's the perfect size and weight for me as I actually EDC it concealed OWB.

I also have the same 3" 3-5-7 series 686+.

In the 1980 & up revolver category... my 617-4 6 inch would be that special one.. not because it is rare... but because it is used most.. by myself and my son... out to 100 yards at times... very capable of busting clay pigeons against the 100 yard burm at my gun club... it is just the most fun to shoot hands down.

Wow, thatís tough. Although I really like 2.5-3 inch L frames, Iíd probably go with the 3.5Ē 27. It just has a certain je ne sais quois.

I'd have to say the 2.5" 686+

In a pinch it can carry reasonably well and take down medium sized game.

PLUS... it looks sooo darn good :-0

My four inch Model 27. Yeah, itís a humble -9 ďClassicĒ model, but with the magnas and grip adapter, it feels absolutely perfect in my hand. A close second is my four inch Model 19-3, the quintessential duty gun of days gone by.

I agree with the OP. The 3" 686 is my favorite also. I built one based on a 686-4 with a 7 shot cylinder and much DA trigger work and turning a Square into a Round butt.

5" K Frame in 38 Special. From the late 1890's up through the last last Model 10 with a pinned barrel. I assume that would be an early 10-7. The balance, dynamic handling qualities and shootability are simply unmatched.

In my very short experience of actually looking at revolvers, my favorite to look at is the 686 PC 5". I only own the model 460 so that's my favorite that I own, but that 5" 686 PC is just too good looking. Definitely need to get me one some time soon.

S&W model 60-10 because it has plenty of umph and I can shoot it accurately. It is plenty handy and comfortable to carry. I carried it way out west and felt well healed.

I canít decide. Between my 442 or my bobbed 37. I really donít know why. Probably because they fit my pockets and know matter where I am I can have it in my hand in the pocket ready to shoot. I doubt it will ever happen but, I could shoot through a jacket or sweatshirt pocket if needed.
