Picked up my new 617 this evening, it's a 4 inch barrel . I was torn between the Smith and the new Colt King Cobra 22, but after handling a Colt I decided on the 617..The Colt felt small and lite weight in my hands . I have a Kimber rimfire super 1911 and it's very lite and I just don't shoot it as well as it can shoot. I really like the feel of the 617.
I have an Allchin mounting plate and an ADE RD3-012 Pro to try on it after I get some rounds thru it. I sure hope I get a chance to shoot it tomorrow ,they are calling for 1-3 inches of snow in my area. Oh well it is stainless it won't hurt to get wet.

Purchased a new 617 4" a few years ago. Extremely satisfied.
One of the more expensive guns that I have purchased, a little under a thousand $.
But it is also my most economical purchase by far.
It has saved me thousands of dollars in 38 Special.

I bought a new 6” 617 last year and love it. Also bought a new KC .22 4” toward the end of the year. I like the Colt, glad I bought it, but agree that the little Colt is a little too little… And I get much better accuracy from the 617.

I also have a 4” 617, but prefer the 6” to the 4” for target shooting. I love taking .22s to the range. They are so much fun to shoot, and much less expensive (and I reload…). Enjoy that Smith!

I've had my 4 inch 617 for about 4 yrs now and LOVE IT. I carry it quite often around our lil rural chicken ranch (in a Simply Rugged pancake) for dispatching rattlers or if a coyote or other pest is spotted. It's a fun and accurate gun.

I would really like to find a pre lock 617 I could afford. I have a nice shotgun I would like to trade but I'm beginning to think I'd have better luck asking the Easter Bunny to bring me one.

I have a cousin who has setup a range on backside of his place. He started with small spinner targets and 3"to 12" round and square steel targets and a dueling target with 4" plates. He has shooting benches at 30 -50-100 yards.Last week we setup 5 steel challenge targets for rimfire.We have a blast with our rimfires and he has several centerfire plates.Looking forward to trying the 617 on all of them.

I have a 617-1 revolver with 4 inch bbl and think it is just about the perfect weight and balance. I like colts also and am glad to see their KC offering, but I just couldn't see myself buying one.

Bought a 4 inch around 11 months ago, liked it so well just had to get the 6 inch around 3 months ago, had some trouble with the 6 inch, after 2nd trip back to the factory, it's working great now.. Now if I can just learn how to shoot the darn things..

I've got the 617 4" and put an ADE 6moa dot on it with a Wiegand mount. I really like it a lot, but had to do work on the trigger. The factory trigger was super heavy, a trigger only a liability lawyer could love. A couple of Wolff springs and stoning the trigger return shoe and she's great now.

Bought a new 617 no dash, 6" and still love it! heck of a revolver..but I have a KC target on order!

Traded into a 4” a few years ago. One of my favorite revolvers- laser accurate, superb trigger, good balance. Simply a fun gun to shoot.

My 2019 617-6 is a tack driver. Trigger was iffy, until I removed the lock with the lock delete plug. Love these. One of the best S&W has built in modern times. I have a 1947 K-22 that matches it most days at the range, sometimes better. Different generations, different feel to each. Both are state of the art, in their times.

I'm a big fan of 617's got one of each 4" 6" and 8-3/8". Use them for bowling pin and plate shoots mostly with the 6" getting the most use.

That being said I just picked up a King Cobra but haven't shot it yet, it's a little to wintery here in Maine right now!

Thanks for posting the photo of you Colt with the Eagle grips. I recently bought a KC and was thinking about buying a set of Eagles like yours. They’re beautiful grips but not sure if they’re a little large for my hand. A set of Hogue might be a better size.

On my 4” 617 I have a set of Altamont Ropers and they’re about as large as I can handle.

We had some pretty nasty weather today but I managed to run a box of cci standard velocity thru the 617. Shooting 10 and 12 inch plates at 12 to 20 yards out.. No great marksman but didnt miss any shooting offhand even one handed. My 73 year old eyes make it hard to see the sights sometimes but really enjoyed ringing them plates today.
SA trigger felt pretty good and DA was not as bad as i thought it would be. Very pleased with the 67.

I have a 617 no dash 6" box, papers, tools, unfired, and no turn line. Lew Horton model combat square butt. I can't get myself to dry fire it, much less shoot a round thru it. I need to pick up more shooter grade models.

These grips actually came on the gun. According to the box it's a custom shop gun. Don't know if there is any difference between this one and a non custom shop version other then the grips.

Are you keeping it as investment with intent on selling it?

Quintessential acquisition. Everyone needs at least one 22 rimfire revolver. I just added a Burris FF4 to my 6” 617-1.

My 617-4 bought used 10 shot prelock. Feels like it’s had a trigger job very light single action. Sweet shooter though

madmikeb, I see that you are a fan of Hogue smooth wood combat grips also. I have 3 sets for different revolvers and one of them resides on my 617. Just curious, are the one's on the revolver in the center tulipwood?

Yes they are tulipwood. Usually the first thing I do when I pick up a revolver is put on Hogue smooth wood combats!

That's what I thought. That is my favorite wood on Hogue grips. I have a set of combats like yours on my 64-2 and a set of round to square butt conversions on my 617. I don't think Hogue offers tulipwood anymore.

No, just keeping as a collector like all of my others. My son can make that decision when he gets my collection.

I had a 617 no dash 6 inch bbl full target that I bought new but like a fool I sold it. That is on the top of my list of regrets!

Bought a brand new 617/4 inch. It locked-up after firing 40 rounds. Sent back to S&W for repair. Returned to me in 2.5 weeks. Fired 50 rounds and it locked up again. So, back to S&W for repair. Awaiting return and hoping they actually fix the problem this time!

Bought a new 617- 6" around 3 months ago, had problems, mainly a bad hitch in the double action trigger pull, first trip in, did not even fix it, 2nd trip in, it seems to be great now, must have got a real good smith the 2nd trip, It's not quite as smooth of a trigger as the 4" I bought around a year ago..

Just picked up a Smith 17-6 4” with no under lug. I’m headed to the range tomorrow to see how it shoots.

Just got a new 6 inch 617 yesterday. Got it sighted in the same day.

Smooth but just a tad heavy DA. So today I put the trigger job on it. Now it’s much better. SA is a touch over 5 lbs but breaks nice.

I’ll use it at the gun club mini bowling pin and plate shoots

My fairly new M617, 6" had a terrible trigger, 12 1/2 lbs.. I changed the rebound spring to a 15# one.. have shot around 1200 rounds to break it in, now has a nice D/A 9 1/2 lbs., S/A 3 1/4 lbs..

This might be considered torture for you but I have two no-dash 617s. Keep looking and you'll find some but there are fewer nice ones left so they become more costly with each passing month.

Hey Ed, why do's the 6" have the stainless steel looking trigger & hammer.. what is the proper word for those ? I sure wish my 6" and 4" had those..

They are "flash chromed".

They are both Alsum looking, why do's the 6" have the chromed trigger & hammer, is it a older model ?

The six-inch was a "target" model; they came with a target trigger and hammer. All no-dash 617s, as well as some later dash numbers, came with flash-chromed triggers and hammers. The "target" package wasn't available on the four-inch but it also had flash-chromed parts. I replaced them with target parts but could only find case-hardened ones. I replaced the rear sights on both guns with Millets - they offer a slightly better sight picture but unfortunately haven't been made for many years. They usually fetch high prices when you find any.

I much prefer the target trigger and hammer and of course my 4 inch bbl 617-1 does not have that. I would pay to have them replaced with the target versions but the action is so good on my revolver as is I won't bother with it.
