How old is my 686-3 ?
Hi to all,
I've just purchased an old S&W revolver 686-3 6inch barrel and I'd like to know when it's been manufactured. Its s/n is BEH4702.
Thank you.
Greetings from France.

Probably late 1989... November or December.
Things you can do:
--if you have the box, the date is encoded on the end label
--send an e-mail to S&W with serial number and they usually reply within two days
--if it has the original stocks, there may be a date inside one of them, in ink. It will NOT date the revolver, but it's still an interesting date that likely pre-dates the revolver

I thought you got your answer in post #2.
Great gun by the way. My 6" is a no dash. I'd prefer your -3. Have fun with that thing. Mine has had many rounds through it. Back when we had to supply our own guns I loaned it out for a year or so to a new young deputy. He liked it too. At least he brought it back without having to be chased down. I loaned my 4" to a detective who needed a gun. I don't remember why now. I had to chase him down after several years to get it back. I also loaned my 659 out when the S.O. was offering very stringent semi-auto transition courses. Collectors are probably horror strickin at the thought of such practices. The S.O. has now gone to mandated and issued 9mm Glocks for all. To me my guns were just guns to be used. Your 6" 689-3 is a very fine gun to be used. Go shoot the heck out of it.

Hello,
The age given looked a bit imprecise. I expected something more accurate. It's just fine.
Thank you for your comments.

It certainly is imprecise.
Did you send an e-mail to S&W as I suggested?
