Default Guessing Game

First, tell me what model this is and once that is determined, what is unusual about it...

Adios,

I see an IL 357 wearing SB targets and don't see a grip screw. Great looking grips too BTW Bob.

Default M686 half lug?

Hmmmm. a shorter version of this?

I'm not aware of a 4" version of the half/lug M686, but they might have done some without the flyers...... maybe...??

It looks to be a model 620. These didn't come from the factory with the Hi-Viz front sight or square butt Target stocks. It also looks to have a flash chromed trigger (and hammer?), but this was well into the MIM era.

That's a round butt with conversion grips.

Well, yes, as it is pictured. So a set of round to square butt conversion stocks, or factory square butt stocks with filler material added to make them fit on a RB grip frame. And the mystery of the invisible stock screw continues...

Thanks, It must have the grip screw on the bottom, has the internal lock, but has the old style hammer & trigger, I don't know the model, looks like a SS model 19..

No guess, except to point out that a missing grip screw could mean brand new grips with no hole yet that are just sitting on the frame. I've done that!

I don't see a S&W trademark.
The stocks have me baffled too.

The flutes on the cylinder are in line with the stop notches making it a 7 shot model 66?

Edit: Looking at a 2005 S&W catalog when the 620 was introduced, I agree with murphydog.

I have no idea on the model but the stocks could very well be Hogue. The grip screw for Hogue is always on the bottom of the grip.

OK, I've had my fun. Yes it is a 620 and yes, it is a round-butt. I found the grip (not stocks in this case) on ebay advertised as an N-frame, round-butt grip. I questioned that because AFAIK Smith never made target stocks, in that configuration, for a round-butt frame. I ended up buying them.

The cut at the back-strap looked like Hogue, as did the mount system (stirrup and single screw). I have a contact at Hogue and I notified them and sent a picture. They remember doing these - the only one according to them. Turns out they are K/L-frame, not N, but that was fine as I have a "few" of those too.

These must have been made from an un-inletted, GA, smooth, target stock blank (actually presentation as they are relieved for a sideplate rollmark). Sent to Hogue where they inletted and permanently joined the two halves (they are book-matched) and installed the boss for the mounting screw.

I thought it neat to have a one-off Smith/Hogue monogrip on a not often seen gun. The gun came to me with the FO front sight and round-butt combat stocks - I have no idea about the hammer and trigger. It is not many serial numbers off from my 619 (same serial prefix).

Thanks for playing.

Adios,

Pizza Bob
