Dream gun came home
I’ve always wanted a mountain gun in 44 or 45LC but my buddy had a brand new unfired 624 and we made a deal. Here it is. I would have only shot specials in a MG anyway… this is my dream gun and the pinnacle of the collection. Range report soon!

Beautiful piece!
There’s a cherry 6.5” with factory targets locally that I’ve been looking at, but the long barrel is a deal breaker for me. If it were a 3 or 4”, I would have brought it home at first sight. Fortunately, I still have my 629-1 Mountain revolver and 625-6 MG in 45 Colt.
I did, however, bring home a 3” 396 a couple weeks ago. Should prove handy for backpacking. The holster weighs more than the gun.
Always looking to add another 3-4 inch 44 spl to the gang.

CONGRATS! The .44 Special has always been my favorite round. Easy to load for and a bit versatile if you reload. I like mild loads and it's just fun to shoot.
I've wanted a 4 inch 624 for a long time. In fact I just brought home the identical 624 this week and it's on my hip as I type this. We live in a rural area in the back-country so coyotes are always an issue with our 60-70 chickens here. In summer add to that rattlers (a vet bill for the dog is around $2k last I heard - so just can't have them around), so around the house here a snake load is always first up during that time of year.
200gr Speer Gold Dots are my favorite for when I leave home, otherwise it's 250gr Keith bullets around 800fps for pests and plinking at home here.

I was finally able to join the 4" 624 club a few months ago. I was blown away when I realized the sb combats were stock. Congrats on your new gun.

OP I had identical Hogue grips on a 686. A little bulky but you will love shooting with them. Congrats on your dream gun.

That's a beautiful example and I'm glad that you are going to shoot it rather than just stare at it.
Good luck with it.

If I had to choose between the 4-inch 624 or a .44 Magnum Mountain Gun I’d flip a coin. Perfectly happy with either. IMO, all one misses with the 624 is the “blackpowder chamfer” on the cylinder, which is nice, but I really prefer a square-butt frame. Bowen Classic Arms did a beautiful blackpowder chamfer job on my square-butt frame, 629 Mountain gun. In my opinion, no one has a better eye for that job than Mr. Bowen. That gun is the “best of both worlds,” but it rarely if ever sees a full-charge .44 Magnum. There’s a good reason why S&W put the heavy barrel profile on production Model 29s.
Well, that’s my long-winded spiel. Congrats on your 624!

Very nice. I love .44sp. At one time I had both a 3" and a 4" 24-3 and let them go. I also had a 6.5" 1950 Target that I got for a song. It had what I think was a blood stain on the back of the frame by the hammer spur that bugged me so I sold it as well. I do have a special order 4" 1950 Target and a 696ND. I will have to start looking for replacements.

OP- nice score. Those grips are very nice also. I pretty much only shoot specials in my model 69. It is a great round.

Thanks for the replies and pics! Theres definitely something about a 4 inch N frame! It’s sad my brother in law is a sheriffs detective and treats guns as tools, has a model 28 highway patrolman that the finish isn’t taken care of. Best part about a N frame? When you run dry you start clubbin’ with it! Haha. Those factory square combats are something else!

Congratulations on getting one of the most versatile N-Frames ever built. (No room for argument )
Was out shooting mine yesterday. 240 SWC’s @ 1000 fps and 240 RNFP’s @ 850 fps, same POA out to 50 yards. Carries great in a Hank Sloan style holster.

Very nice! You’ll love it. Mine had to go back to the mother ship a couple years ago as it developed push off. It returned with an even better trigger pull. I’ve also put a set of Wilson springs in it. It currently wears targets but I’ve got a set of Ahrends I think I’m going to switch it to.
The 624 is about the perfect “woods” gun. I load a close analog to Skeeter’s recipe. 7.5 grains of Herco with a coated 240 grain SWC. Runs 899fps average from my 4 inch. I’ve got Simply Rugged and DM Bullard leather for it.
Some day my kids will have to figure out what they want to do as I’m never selling it…..

I put a few rounds on a 12” AR-500 plate in my range pit out behind the house. The reloads were with an HKS speed-loader. What a smoooooth action this 624 has.
I love the ring of 250gr .44’s on steel!

Is the OP allowed to change the title of this Thread to something like that? I'd love to see a 624 Fan Club thread... This one is off to a good start is why I suggest perhaps...? After all it's among S&W's greatest!
