My search mojo has failed me so any help on this model is appreciated. I found one locally in the box and from the photos shoes very light use.

I’ll be inspecting it in the the next day or two. I thought the factory bobbed hammer dao was a contract overrun but my memory is failing me on the details.

It's an oddball, for sure. Here's a blurb I wrote about them:

The company completed a limited number of Chiefs Special Airweight Model 37-2s without the internal lock after 2001. The frames, not J-Magnum frames, appear to be leftover 1995 or earlier frames with the old riveted cylinder stop. Some are Double Action Only models with bobbed hammers. DAO or not, the firing pin is mounted on a forged hammer. Triggers are also not MIM. Thumb pieces are the new beveled style. The large S&W logo is stamped on the side plate, not the frame, and the word “Airweight,” which used to be stamped above the caliber on the right side of the barrel, is scribed in script on the lower front of the side plate. The stamped address on the frame’s right side below the yoke reads, “SPFLD,MA” above “S&W U.S.A.” A 2” barrel has “.38 S.&W. SPL. +P” stamped on the left and “SMITH & WESSON” on the right. The finish is black, and the logo and all the text except the barrel’s stampings have a white fill. They wear OEM Uncle Mike’s boot grips. Known serial numbers for DAO models begin with DAA and DAG prefixes, and the DA/SA models begin DAA and DAC. Photos of labels on the known DAO models’ cases show Product Code 649968, which is unusual compared to the era-standard blue Model 37-2 PC 101602.

Please get the s/n for the database, and if possible shoot a few photos.

Thank you!! I’ll be filling out the 4473 and background check hopefully later today then it will sit in Colorado gun jail for 3 days. I’ll take some pics then and will send the serial number to two-bit cowboy. Should bring it home Saturday.

If I remember correctly, most of those were contract overrun guns for a Japanese police contract.

Well unfortunately the revolver was in rougher shape than the pics showed. Interestingly the prefix was DAC but it was definitely a dao piece. I didn’t take note of the product code. I ended up getting a Henry lever gun in .357 instead
