686-3 at LGS worth it?
Hey guys. I ran across a 686-3 in 4” with what appears to be factory square combats. I took a look at it. It’s a “shooters” gun for sure. Not mint. In fact there is a little pitting on the frame. They want $800. Here’s a couple pics. I tried to capture the pitting as well.

The combats are not original to that revolver but they certainly have a value all on their own that most definitely enhances the purchase.

The -3 is the best version of the 686 with combats the price is good
The wear & tear should be able to be polished out
Go lightly and slow by the lettering. I sold a nicer one
at a gun show for 9

686-4
Got a 686-4 with 6 inch barrel on Lay-A-Way at my Local Gun Shop. It is also a shooter. Gave $675+sales tax.

I'd go max $750 just because of the combats. (gun $550; combats $200) AND, its' a 4"!

I'd offer $700 and maybe go up to $750 to take that one home.
The square combats are worth a couple of Benjamins all by themselves.
Good luck in your negotiations...

In the past too many times I worried the price may be too high and left, when I decided to go for a second look and it was gone.
Nowadays I don't let $50 stand in my way.

Doesn't look like a screwdriver ever touched the yoke screw. Nice gun but to me, you could get a brand new one for only around $100 more. If having no lock and no MIM is important to you, then go for it. Great gun for a reasonble price in today's market.

That gun would be $750 around here without the combat grips. So it would have flown off the shelf with the combats for that price.

If you’re looking for one, that’s a fair price with combats. If you can get it for less, great.

I can tell everyone here that I would have already bought it if it weren’t for the pitting. I don’t think the pictures quite capture the extent of it. There’s more around the front of the frame below the barrel. Worse than what’s pictured there. Doesn’t affect the function whatsoever but it makes it far from perfect. And it’s too deep to just polish out.

I would buy it and have it bead blasted. Hopefully the putting could be eliminated. My 686-4 got that treatment. It didn’t have pitting just a lot of scratches and I like the look of the factory “combat revolver package”

Seen one like it for less lately?
Expect to see another one anytime soon?

Well, I ran across another 686-3 4”. This one has factory checkered grips on it. No pitting and it’s $200 less. Might try and make a deal on that one then find some factory combats for it.

That one is nice, but by the time you buy the gun and find an original set of combats you’re going to be at or above the price of the other one. But that second one you just showed is in nicer shape.

Ya that’s why I’m leaning towards the 2nd one. The pitting on the 1st one turned me off initially. The combats kept bringing me back.

Can always get a set of repro combats for way cheaper as well, I always would go for the nicer option unless you plan on shooting it a lot and not caring if it gets used

The goncalo alves targets on the second 686 are exactly what that revolver shipped with.. if originality counts for any points.

Just purchased the 2nd one. WAY cleaner than the first. And a little over $200 cheaper!! I do agree on originality. The target stocks will stay. Combats have their place for sure. That’s definitely the main draw of the first one.

For my money you made the right choice.
Pitting is something that can't easily be fixed.
Grips are easy to change, and even though the square-butt combats add "value" Combats don't really fit me - or even appeal to me all that much.
I think you made the right choice.

686-3
Here in the Peoples’ Republic of Kalifornia, $800 would be a very good deal.

Thanks for all the input. I feel I made the right choice too. Currently working on giving the stocks a good clean up and wax.
