Red inserts
Which j frames come with red inserts in the front sights?
I like the feature, but the only j frame I have with the red inserts is a 340pd.

I'm talking about the small plastic orange/red thingies in front ramp sights on revolvers.
I like guns that have them because it's easier than see the front sight.
They used to be common on most revolvers, but seem to have been phased out.

I too like the inserts. Few of the revolvers I currently own left the factory with one installed. But, that's easy to correct, a base coat of white nail polish or paint followed by several THIN coats of whatever color you want and you are good to go.

Several companies make special paint for front sights. I use Birchwood Casey and it works quite well. It’s around $16 and has white, bright green and bright red in applicator tubes that you just shake and apply to the sight. It’s not messy and sticks really well to the sight. It eventually wears off but can be applied again.

I'm not sure which J frame does today.
Back in my day, 1960s to 1980s, the J frames did not have the feature RR/WO as I recall. As the others mentioned, fingernail polish and such will suffice.

No thanks- Not a fan of red ramp inserts. All of mine have been replaced by front and rear night sights. This includes, GASP, my 4" 629-No Dash, which was NIB when I got it ~10 years ago.

In surfing the net, I found pictures of Model 63 no dash's with the red inserts.
So there are other j frame with the insert besides my 340pd.

The red inserts were the way to go back in the day. I liked them too and still have many revolvers with factory inserts. That said, they do shrink, loosen and either fall out of move over time in many instances. They also seem to get dull and scratched over time as well. Not a huge job to repair them but I have discovered that painting the front sight is even better IMHO.
Testor's brand model paint in the small 1/2 ounce bottles works incredibly well! It is available in a gazillion colors, it' very durable, brighter than the inserts (depending on the color of course), color can be easily changed, renewed if necessary, or completely removed without any damage at all. It gives you all the advantages (and then some) of the factory insert without any negatives! The Testor's paint cost less than $3 a bottle and is available in almost any hobby store. Hint: 3 - 4 thin coats applied to a cleaned front sight with a toothpick is the way to go. Let each coat dry over night. Apply to the same exact spot as a red insert would be in.
NOTE: the Revolver below is a Combat Masterpiece that I painted over 20 years ago. This revolver gets shot quite often and I have done exactly 1, one coat touch up to refresh over that time. The color I use is Testor's #1127 GL (gloss). Do not buy the flat version for sights. The Tetsor's paint is not effected by cleaning solvents or oils either.
No more dovetailed inserts for me!

I have a 327pc snub 8 shot.
It came with the front sight colored red/orange , but no insert
Mine is a 2010 vintage gun that still had the forged trigger and hammer.

What date did the factory first start installing RRF sights on revolvers in std. production or as a special order. When did the Service dept. start same?
Maybe this is a question for Dr.Jinks...but I'm sure one of you will know the answer.
