Default S&W factory box and papers

Wasn't sure where to post this but why is it such a big deal to have or not have the factory box with a used gun? I understand if it's unfired but used? Just seems over rated to me.

What would you rather have, a complete setup, or half? It's all a matter of preference. I'd rather have a complete set, gun, box, cleaning kit and paperwork.

Depends on the gun from my perspective. If it is current production and used, I don't care if there's a box or not; just more storage headaches.

If it is a collectible piece from decades ago, such as a Registered Magnum, first year 44 Magnum, or most anything up until 1968 or so then yes, the box matters and has value. In those it is great to have THE box, but having the whole package is nice whether original or not as the boxes, tools, etc. are often collectible themselves.

As to the wooden presentation boxes, no way to know for most of them if they were THE box or not and those present more of a storage issue. Since they seem to be worth $200+ these days I'll certainly take them with the gun but don't feel all that badly if the used gun is by itself. Now, if the entire shipping package is there ANIB including the unlabeled blue box and the cardboard shipping container, I'll find a place to store them.

All Smith & Wesson revolvers are fired before they leave the factory. I’m not aware of any “unfired” but I guess there could be.
Collectors that don’t shoot their guns will pay extra for a gun in collectable condition with the box. I’m a collector that shoots my guns. I might give extra consideration for a gun with the box, but not much.

Just like with cars, there are varying levels of collectors, level of conditions, and knowledge of buyers. I’ve collected Smith & Wesson Handguns for over 50 years. But I’d never try to buy a Registered Magnum, I just don’t know enough to get into that game.
