Round butt target grips. Smooth and checkered versions were offered.

S&W Model 547, available with a 3” barrel and round butt, like OP’s (and mine,) and 4” barrel with square butt.

They shoot great, with recoil similar to +P 38spl.

Ejection is good with the short case and long extractor rod. Reloading with a speed loader is a bit slower, at least for me. Need to swipe my left thumb across the end of the cylinder to ensure each case has inserted past the pawls on the ejector star.

Reminds me that mine is due for a trip to the range.

I've never understood the logic behind the 547 revolver. S&W had solved the problem of shooting rimless cartridges in revolvers in 1917 by head-spacing cylinders, and made it better with the use of moonclips, then around 1980 they came out with the 547. This revolver has a fairly complicated and somewhat fragile extractor. It always seemed to be the solution to a problem that didn't exist.

I have a 4" SB with pinned barrel. I like it because It's so odd. With a 5 year production run S&W gave up on it quickly. I guess a 9mm Auto Rim was not in the cards. I still have not shot it but I guess I should give it a try. Mine came with the instruction manual that has a diagram of the ejection mechanism. It does look like it could be a bit fragile.

The version I have is that it was developed on a RFP from France who then had a FBI trained expert recommending revolvers, AND a wish to use 9mm ammo like the military. Smith should have learned from history when 50 years earlier France reneged on a deal with FN for the predecessor of the BHP.

Ruger had a simpler trick rimless extractor that did not work well with European 9mm, so they defaulted to clips. I think the guns actually delivered were .357s.

Federal offered 9mm Rimmed for a while. I don't think it works in a 547, but it does in a 940.

A friend had a Ruger 357/9mm. I never shot it.

S&W had the 310 NG, 610, 646 40 S&W, 686-7 38 super, 640-642 9mm, and the 929 and 940. None of them really caught on, although I had a 310 Night Guard and thought it was great. A real hand full with 10mm.

I had no idea.

You can find them aftermarket however if you want factory they are a little pricey and hard to come by. I see the smooth presentation grips
