Anyone know how to modify an aftermarket wooden grip to fit a "classics" line model 40? Would some careful filing/rasping of the part of the grip that fits into the grip frame be enough? If you've done this, please let me know how you did it. Thanks.

They were Eagle Secret Service grips actually. Pretty simple. Took a Dremel on low speed and rounded the radius down on the back that fit into the semicircular cutout in the frame. Bout thirty minutes work and they fit pretty good, even taking into account my limited skills. Deercop, didn't know Spegel was making grips for this frame; may have to try a set. I'm a sucker for boot grips on round butt frames of all kinds.

Any J-frame round butt grip will fit the 40, "Classic" or original, without modification. Some better than others depending on maker.

Here's a pic comparing the Spegel grips for the 40-1 (left, 2008, walnut) with the ones for a "standard" J-frame round butt (right, 2004, cocobolo).

IIRC, member "jframe" successfully modified some Spegel boot grips to fit his 40-1.

On the other hand, I bought some Spegel grips made specifically for the 40-1.

Sorry, but at least part of that statement is not correct. I don't know about the fit on the newly released model 40's, but the standard J-grips will not fit the earlier model 40's.

The steel discs on the backside of the grips, and the area in the frame it fits in, is smaller on the earlier 40's.

Example: Standard J-frame grips will not fit this style of model 40 unless the grips are modified.

No, they won't. The mechanism for the grip safety gets in the way.
