Default 625 Mountain Gun find (Range report added post 10)

I found this 625 Mountain Gun at a small town show last weekend. Came with it's original labeled box and I couldn't pass it up for the price. Stocks were upgraded from the usual Houges and I didn't complain. Price was $750. My question is; did these suffer from the oversized throats like the 25-5 did, or are they more "normal" sized?

Cool find!
You don’t see those every day. Looks good with the combats.
I found mine NIB at a show. Gave $1K in 2017.

That is a GREAT deal in today's market

I really enjoy the Model 25/625 Mountain Guns chambered for the 45 Long Colt cartridge

Both of mine shoot great and have correct modern size throats

I have put the Factory Combats on my Mountain Guns as well. They just fit my hands right

Thanks, I was wondering because my 4" 25-5 throats are about .459-.460. It loves my SAA loads with .452 250 gr. SWCs, but won't group a 200 gr. bullet. I'm guessing because it is shorter. I have several thousand 200 grainers to use up, so I'm hoping this one likes 'em.

My 25-5 won't group anything .452 in in dia. . Did the drop test.........454's hung up in the throats...........So That's what I use to make it group instead of pattern.

Love mine and it shoots great. It is also a freckle lighter than the 44 Mountain gun. As I understand it the early 625 Guns had the larger cylinder throats but changed shortly before the -6. Someone could tell when but be glad you got this one. It shot rings around my Colt SAA with .457 throats until I had it fitted with a new .357 cylinder that was bored to
.452.

Well, I had a chance to do some range testing yesterday and, let's just say, this one found it's forever home. Testing was done at 10 yards with 12 shots off hand single action and then 12 shots off hand double action. After that I settled in for some more serious work. The third target was fired with the 200 gr. bullets that I was hoping this gun would like. The two white spots were sighting shots, and after fine tuning the sights, I printed this 6 shot group. The last target was fired with my 250 gr. loads using the same sight settings. I probably could have done a little better had I removed the powder residue that turned the front sight gray, but I'm not complaining about the results.

Smile Wow

Thank you for sharing your Range Report.
Great shooting and the targets prove it!

Pretty much what my S&W 625-6 M.G.
45Colt does with Cast Lead 250 RNFs.

Now step back to 30 yards, supported arms
with sand bags or whatever, and see what it
does with the 250gr. I’m guessing it will
print about 6” low.

The Best to you and your Endeavors.

See what she’ll do free hand at 40-50 yds. I shoot all my SD guns from this distance since the Mall shooting in Indiana. Just as a curiosity.

A 625 Mountain Gun is my idea of a perfect field gun. Powerful, handy, and the .45 Colt cartidge is a nice balance of power vs. recoil. I customized this 25-6 to my taste and find it is one of my favorite revolvers for outdoors packing.

The 45 colt is a great round. Especially if you warm it up a bit. I don't mean "Magnum pressures" but if you keep it in the same pressure ranges as the 45acp and acp +P it will give a 44 mag a run for its money for a serious game stopper. A .452 255 gr bullet moving at 1000fps isn't easy to stop and makes a serious hole. With a 50yd zero it only drops 2.5" more at 100yds than a 44 mag with the same zero and even the 44 starts turning into a rainbow after 100yds.

I doubt anything hit with either will drop any harder than the other.
