Default Oddly Serial Numbered 629-1

Need help on a Smith 629-1 I just acquired The Revolver is an 8 3/8 inch Target model but the butt serial number is same as number on frame at cylinder crane but does not conform to Smith Serial number pattern or format.

Butt and Frame at crane serial number is BAS00XX ie three letter 4 numbers and Not preceded by the N not the normal N followed by 6 numbers.

any information would be appreciated.

This one was made after the N prefix went away in about 1983. Prefix BAS looks to be from the winter to spring of 1988.

All S&W revolvers had three letter Serial Numbers starting with AAA000 in 1980.

The last "N" Serial Number was N932999 in 1983. So a overlap of numbers.
