Had a chance to shoot a friends 686 SSR on which he had installed "SDR Super Sights" Fiber Optic, in Green ...Brownells Carries them.
S&W also carries Fiber Optic Front sights in Green and I'm wondering if any of you have had a chance to compare the brightness and or effectiveness of these two?
Also, being they are a fiber optic material are they more fragile than the factory stock front sight?
Is there any down side to these Fiber Optic front sights ... sure seemed nice to me?
Have you found it necessary to change the factory stock rear sights (on a 686 SSR) to maximize the effectiveness? Would a "white outlined" rear sight add to or take away from the effectiveness?
Thanks
Ken
PS: I don't know how to paste in Links on this Forum or I would have added them for both Brownells and SW

I use the SDM fiber optic sights and really like them a lot. I have not ever had any problems with them. They really are very effective outside.

Looking (on line) at a Galco "Phoenix" Holster as it has a very specific "sight channel" ... looks to be specifically stitched to protect front sights. Hope to see one in a shop soon.
Have you had any concern about Holsters and your SDM sight?
Thanks

No, I use a blade tech for my revolvers with fiber optic sights and it has a very good sight channel.

Thanks King,
did you change your rear sight because of the Fiber Optic front ? If so, what did you change to?
Thanks

I am playing with green illuminated square post front sights on my 627PC, 686SSR, and GP100. I have the green HiViz sights on the Smiths and a Marble on the Ruger. They seem to provide some advantage in low to mid range light and they definately provide an advantage on all black targets. I haven't yet seen any difference between the different manufacturers. I need to keep experimenting.

Since installing the HiViz set on my 610, I've come to prefer the 'green front/red rear' (?or is it the other way around) motif....3 fiber dots in a line, different colors....gets my attention and my dwindling old peepers appreciate the help.

I'm also wondering if anyone has put on the Crimson Trace Laser beam Grips AND the Fiber Optic front sight?
Seems like it would/could be very helpful to one with Vision issues or concerns, but,may also be a classic caseof "Overkill".

I use green front red rear very easy to pick up on out doors, only disadvantage I have with fiber optics is shooting as tight of a group. But definitely great for hunting or self defense.
