It's almost impossible to say exactly when your Model 629 was manufactured. 629s were introduced in 1979 with a 6" bbl. and produced until 1982 (when the 629-1 was released). The 4" and 8-3/8" bbl. versions were introduced in 1981. What barrel length is your 629? According to the "SCSW 4th Ed.", N-frame serial numbers in the N800000 range were manufactured from 1980 to 1983. But some N900000 s/n's overlapped: 1982-1986. Interpolating your s/n of N870861, I would think your 629 was manufactured in mid-1982 just prior to the release of the 629-1. A letter from S&W would tell you the shipping date, but not the manufacture date.
