I'm not sure that I can provide much assistance. I dug into the "SCSW 4th Ed.", and it says that your Model 629-5 6" Classic (s/n CDM2501; Product Code 103638) was manufactured in 2001. However, I could not confirm that date in the serial number Appendix B. The Triple-Alpha serial numbers (e.g. CDMxxxx, etc.) were often used out of sequence. I could not find "CDM" listed, but "CDJ", "CDK", and "CDP" thru "CDW" were listed for 1999; and "CDL" and "CDN" thru "CDZ" examples were listed for 2000. There were no "CD_" s/n's listed after 2000. In your case, I would probably go with the Product Code date of 2001. Some other Forum members may be along shortly to provide more info. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!

It happens. If you have the box, the special order number is the Julian date for when it shipped. Or you can call customer service and they can tell you.

OK, so the Special Order code 9193 means the revolver was manufactured on the 193rd day of 1999...correct? Nightowl converted that to July 12, 1999. That means that the "SCSW 4th Ed." (Page 310) listing for Product Code 103638 (manuf. 2001) is off by a couple of years. Since the s/n ranges in the "SCSW 4th Ed." are actual sightings (Page 491), scruffy's Model 629-5 could be the first CDM triple-alpha s/n reported for 1999. That would put it inline with CDK and CDP, even though CDL and CDN were manufactured in 2000. Makes sense to me...not! LOL!

Doesn't make sense to me either, but when I contacted S&W customer service about date of manufacture/shipment, they had a hard time due to the CDM prefix, but after a short hold they came back and told me 1999, but without month or day.

I assume that the date stamped on the label is the date that the gun was boxed and placed in inventory. No idea how that relates to manufacture date or ship date.

Yes. 629-5 started 1997 with MIM trigger and hammer, firing pin in frame and ran through 2000. 2001 started -6 with internal lock.
