Default Model 242

Well it's been quite a while since I have been active in the forum. Kids and financing them have really halted my buying of guns and even just the everyday business of family has really slowed down my forum use and range time. But I came across this 242 and I had to have it. Certainly used and has the usual cosmetic wear that plagued the SC models. The mechanics are great though. Has anyone ever pegged down how many of these were made in the short production span and what would be a good value? I've checked GB but there just aren't any out there of than an excellent condition in a box that sold.

Welcome back.

I believe that they were only made for about one year in the early 1990's.
The experts will be along to correct/verify that for us.
A similar 5-shot model was available in .44 Spl.

I had the same one as you, I saw it in the display case and thought that it was pretty neat. It had one of the best triggers on a DA S&W. It was as smooth as could be. The front sight didn't even move when dry firing it.

Sometime later, I was in a utilitarian mood and traded it because it didn't really fit into any of my useful applications. Being an L-frame, it was too big for pocket carry and there are so many other choices for belt carry.

Enjoy it though, it's still pretty neat.

I have never seen either a 242 or a 296 in the wild, not even in the large gun shows. Neat pick up.

Do you mind sharing what you had to pay for this?

$300 well spent! I'd love to find a shooter 242 for under $500.

I've read in multiple places that the 242 was made in 1990 (Blue Book, Gun Digest, Chuckhawks<dot>com), but that's not correct. These came out in 1999 and were soon discontinued because of poor sales and high prices. MSRP was around $700, which was big money back then.

Sometime around 2001, an online dealer located in Saginaw Michigan was blowing out new 242Ti's for under $400. A friend and I made the two hour drive and we each bought one. Pre-made holsters were all but impossible to find, so I ordered an MSP Paddle from Kramer.

I’m really not looking for one.
But at $300, I’m a Buyer!

Neat guns, a bit large (but light) for anything but holster carry.
Had this pair ~30 years ago, or so.
These are on the long list of guns I wish I hadn't traded away back then.

Enjoy.........

Depends on the size of the pockets. I have a 296 and have pocket carried it in a Mika holster.
