I have a 629-2 Mountain Revolver. Looks like it was made in 1989.
How do know if it has a floating hand?
Thanks.

What is the reason for a floating hand? Eyeballing the photos, it doesn't look like it was intended for cost savings. Perhaps less fitting yielded a cost savings. Any performance benefits?

I have a Davis Custom with the floating hand, not too sure what the benefit may be. Am guessing that since the hand isn't anchored to the trigger it allows for a better wearing in and lock up with the ratchet. Also, no wearing in the slot on the up stroke.

Supposedly.

Hard to tell but it looks like the hand isn't setting all the way down on the trigger.
That head on the left one is how I can tell for sure.
Seems like I read something about they didn't well and the guns made in 89 didn't have them.

Thanks, KurtC. Interesting that S&W let them out in the wild apparently without much evaluation. Not the first time a company has done something like that, I suppose.

Most folks shoot single action. I first noticed it in 1988, while qualifying with the 625-2. I had Art Leckie (Austin Behlert's son in-law) change it out for me.
