I just purchased and finally received my S&W 627-3 revolver. I cannot find info in any books, listing dates of manufacture because I cannot seem to locate the serial number that I found under the grip. It was advertised as a Lew Horton model. Specifically, it came in the Aluminum Performance Center locking case. It is a stainless steel S&W 627-3 (without the compensator) 8-shot, round wooden grip with the slab side 5" barrel with NO LOCK. Cylinder is cut for moon clips and charge holes are chamfered.
Serial no. under the grip is SHS00XX. There is another post on this forum which lists all the 627 variations, dates, and serial numbers. However, that list shows the SHSXXXX Serial numbers are listed 1 of 147 from 1997, and also identifies it as a Lew Horton variation, but shows it as a 627-PC model, not a 627-3. I have contacted Susan Larusso who is the former VP and acting Historian who maintains the LHD database for the now-closed Lew Horton Distribution company. She confirmed it is indeed a LHD gun, and is sending me a Certificate of Authenticity, but I'm looking for an explanation of the descrepancy of model numbers. Perhaps the letter will shed some light... or may add more confusion. Seems the all the 627-3 5" guns (except ones with unfluted cylinder) have the "V-Comp" compensator on the barrel end. Can anyone please help?

OK, received a clarification of sorts from Susan Larusso at the former Lew Horton Distributing Inc:

Hi Steve,

Please see the letter attached with the correct model number 627-3.
It’s true that 147 of S&W170089 have the serial number prefix of SHS and the remainder serial number prefixes are random.
LHD’s part number for yours is S&W170089SN. The “SN” signifies a serial number under 101.
I’m sorry, but I do not have an explanation for the 627-PC designation.
I will mail the original by tomorrow at the latest.
