Default S=W warranty

Have a 586 that has a possible problem that I contacted S+W about as was informed that it was built around 1987 so there are NO warranty or service plans available for that gun. Is that right? Kind of thought they had lifetime warranty. Just askin'.

It was made in the era of the Lifetime Warranty, but interpretation of that policy varies some. What specifically were you requesting?

The S&W Lifetime Warranty policy for the original owner was started on February 1, 1989 according to the S&W website.

https://www.smith-wesson.com/customer-service/warranty

S&W certainly works on guns older than that, but they'd be routed to the "charge team" gunsmiths versus the warranty gunsmiths. The difference is that the charge team evaluates the gun first and comes up with a price quote to repair it. You then need to pay that before they do the work. You also need to pay shipping for charge work. S&W pays the shipping on warranty repairs.
Depending on what is wrong you may want to consider whether a local gunsmith can repair it more economically when you factor shipping.
Or contact customer service again and clarify if they'd do "charge work" on the gun.

Per S&W:
“Smith & Wesson’s Lifetime Service Policy begins after the warranty period has expired. Smith & Wesson will repair, without charge, for the lifetime of the original owner, any Smith & Wesson handgun purchased on or after February 1, 1989”

Jim

Edit, I’m way too slow. JRD already posted it.

So what is the issue with the 586 and which dash is it?

No dash and according to S+W, it was built around 1987. No dash at all. It has a slight bulge in the barrel just forward of the chamber. Don't remember anything happening to it and it has mostly had wadcutters shot through it. It MAYBE has had a box or two of magnums shot through it. It still shoots fine and if I have to live with it, I will. It would need a new barrel though to fix it, I'm assuming. I just tthought I'd ask S+W if they had ANY type of warranty. Guess I missed out by a couple of years.

If there is a (very) slight bulge in the barrel just forward of where it threads into the frame, this might have occurred during assembly.

Does it still shoot well? If not, a new barrel can be found relatively easily and installed.

Shoots very well. Not going to get into a new barrel as I've seen the cost of them! Just was hoping they (S+W) would cover it. If not, it shoots fine the way it is.

Maybe what I'd do is email their service some pics of said bulge. See what they think about charging for fixing it. You might get lucky & they say it's on their dime. You never know.

An image of the barrel would help here. But if you are the original owner, never put nuclear-level loads or had a bore obstruction followed by a round, likely this is how it came from the factory.

I was ready to send pics in with the inquiry but their contact page didn't allow attachments. You REALLY can't see much in the pics though. I tried various lighting and angles and ever got much. Don't remember any "nuclear level" loads EVER going through it! I'm pretty conservative on my handloads. My favorite load is 3.2 grains of 231 behind 158gr SWC. Pretty tame. Mostly these loads are what has gone through it. MAYBE a couple of boxes of magnums, and THEY were factory loads.

As I understand it from reading your post, your gun was built in 1987. AFAIK, the S&W Lifetime Warranty started in February of 1989 - and that applies to only the original owner. While unfortunate for you, I see no way around that. Basically you do not have a Lifetime Warranty on your revolver.

That said, if the gun operates and shoots well, you are probably best off leaving well enough alone. If there are any issue with it, then yes, you should get the barrel replaced - but only if there are issues.

S&W, (Smith and Wesson), not Smith equals Wesson or Smith plus Wesson.

Did you try a copy & paste? Make sure the pic isn't huge, that sort of thing.

Wish I could find the picture I saw of a guy sitting on a beach with a HUGE "Smith & Weston" tattoo on his back.

Tried copy and paste and using the BB codes that we used back in the day to insert photos into BB. Nothing worked. They were pretty emphatic that it was a no go so I think I'll just shoot it and enjoy it. I was the orignal owner though but that didn't seem to make any difference to them. Oh well, it still goes bang and shoots better that I do!
