Check to see if the ejector rod is backed out (unscrewed) a bit. They are left hand threads.

Does the cylinder rotate freely when closed?

Why have you waited years to complain about this?
Should have been solved 8 years ago.
This is the sort of issue that dumps you into warranty hell.

It may not be that the ejector rod has unscrewed. It may be that the center pin is too short. If it is, the locking bolt under the barrel will not be pushed back far enough to clear the front end of the rod.

There are basically three things that cause hard opening:
1) If the gun has worked normally and the situation suddenly develops then almost always the extractor rod has loosened. Tighten the extractor rod!
2) There could also be debris inside the lockwork limiting "Bolt" travel and preventing it from moving fully forward. Clean the interior of the frame thoroughly.
3) If the problem has existed since the gun was new then it is the extractor rod was never fit properly and is too long. The center pin cannot push the "Locking Bolt" (In the barrel lug) fully out of engagement with the extractor rod. The extractor rod needs to be shortened slightly, usually only .002-005".

I put moly on the rear of the cylinder where the lock pin is and on the front of the ejector rod. Even a gun grease will do. The opening and closing of the cylinder smoothes right out. Make sure the rod is tight first. I always lube both ends on the cylinder the lever. The star wheel and the ejector rod on the front besides the swing out lug and the cylinder stud. I let nothing run dry.
