I read that the Model 640 is built on the larger J magnum frame. Will any J frame RB grips fit this revolver (i.e., model 36 etc...) or is this a different grips size than a RB Chiefs Special?

Grip frame is the same. Any J-frame stocks should fit. I have a 649 built on the J-mag frame, and regular J stocks fit fine. I think the only variance was very early J-frames which were made a bit differently than the more modern crop. But those are nearly ancient history.
