I just picked up a Md 17-4 today with SN-AFKxxxx. I called Smith and was told the gun was made in 1981. In the SCSW they list "K" frame serial numbers for 1981 from 91K6801-124K000. Is there any reason mine would have the new three letter prefix and not the one "K" style serial number? If anyone has a 1980-83 vintage md 17-4 I would be interested in knowing what SN ranges you have.

My 17-4 is a 99k2775 number & is in the original 2 piece box, but the barrel is not pinned, so I figured it is probably a 1981 or 82.

Mine is 25K2XXX and dates to early 1978.
Sorry, looks like my info is not much help in answering your question.
You may want to call S&W again --- could be the person you first spoke with was simply mistaken or they may have not heard your serial # correctly.
As a side-note, your question about your M-17 reminded me of the circumstances of how I got mine. In the early 80's I went to a gun show in Atlanta --- I really wanted a K-22 and I had a used 4 inch .22 cal. Colt Diamondback (about 95% plus with rubber grips). Well I traded for the NIB 17-4 that I still have. Just wish I still had the Diamondback also, given whats happened with the price of all the Colts....

I would expect prefix AFK to date to 1984 and we're dealing with ship dates, not DOM.
Does your 17-4 have a pinned barrel? Pinned barrels were eliminated in 1982.

My 17-4 has S/N AFB-0XXX. I was curious if you have ever gotten more info about the AF prefix?

Mine dates to 83.
S&W didn't always issue a revision number when something changed. The -4s spanned a time between pinned barrels and the switch over to the triple alpha serials.
S&W was also one to never let anything go to waste. There are guns out there with pinned barrels, and no recessed cylinders, as well as recessed cylinders and no pinned barrels. I have seen several model 27s like that.
