I have a 4" square butt model 547 that one source told me was made in 1977. I would like to see if anyone can verify that date. I got it in the 1980's so I'm not even sure the 547 was being made in 1977. Nay help will be appreciated.

According to the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, the 547 was made from 1980-1985.
A 19D-prefixed serial number dates to 1983.

Actually, I edited my post above; I looked at the wrong section of the book at first.
Your 19D serial number is from 1983.

I have both a 3" (16D11xx) and a 4" (19D92xx). I lettered the 3" several years ago and Roy said it was shipped on 1/18/83. He also provided the following production information.
1979 1
1980 140
1981 11
1982 0
1983 6486
1984 3460
1985 178
1986 3
So it looks like the made 10,279 over an eight year period.

I have 9D36xx; any premium for the earlier guns? When did S&W stop pinned bbl's ...before, after, or during 1983?
Thanks for that chart, that's really cool to know!

Pinned barrels stopped in 1982. My 1981 vintage 547 has a pinned barrel. My other friends later 547s do not have pinned barrels.

Here's my 3" (5D59082) which letters as being in the pilot run of 140 in 1980 and later shipped to a S&W Representative in 1986. In that batch, 40 had the 3" barrel. Mr. Jinks said a pilot run tests the models in all aspects and not put up for sale.

They all look like garbage and should be sent to me for proper disposal. Seriously, I lust after a 547. 3 inch, 4 inch, whatever.

Gary, I'm on the same quest. I need a 3" 547 to match my 4" and my 940. I don't think the "without paying too much" part is possible. Jim

Here are two of mine. Have a few more tucked away. Both were purchased used so I don't know the story on the chromed revolver. It is a fine shooter and the favourite.

Just seeing if this thread isn't too old to "dig up". There is a member seeking production numbers of the 547.
