I am interested in finding out if Smith offered the newer full lugged Model 14s with a 4" barrel. I recall seeing some pictures some time back of a full lug 4" tube that may have been retrofitted to a Model 19. And I think the gentleman who had it done said that Smith used up he last of the full lug 4" tubes from some other project.

The reason for the request is that I am using a 14 with a full lugged 6" barrel for PPC and wanted to seee if the shorter version was available for Duty Gun matches.

Thanks for the help.

Mack,

I've seen forum moderator SmithNut post pics of at least one of the full-lugged Model 14 4" guns that he has. If there is a source for these barrels, I'd like to have one too and for the same reason.

Hard to find. I was fortunate enough to ask and receive. Wouldn't think of selling it. Don't know if just the barrels are available. Have all three in four inch full lug: 14, 16, and 17. The night I was buying the 16 a friend offered a nice 16-4 in 6" to me and I couldn't afford them both.

Here you go, if you want a full lug for the 14. Have the threads cut down and go for it.

Have you done this? If so, is the 586 barrel as accurate? Just wondering....

If you look for it there is a post on a 66 with a 686 barrel on it. Being accurate, I would say you have a 90/10% for it. Only thing I see is you may need to put a ball latch on the yoke, which is no big deal. Here is the post:

Would these barrels at the link fit a 14-3 pinned barrel frame?

Mack,
As Bud has shown there were some 4" full underlug models made, but very few. These were a special production product made for Roper Police Supply, but there were only approx 125 made over about a 5-6 year period. If there were a source for the barrels, I'd certainly be looking too, as this is just about the handiest shooting K frame made.
Here's some info on the model:

Thanks for the info. I was sure that these beasties had been made. The one sad thing about Smith is that some of the most useful configurations, like the 4" Model 14s and the 3" Model 19s, aren't regular items.

A good friend who wanted a 3" K-frame with adjustable sights for undercover matches was forced to wed a cut down 4" chrome moly tube to a Model 66, re-contour the barrel to match the frame contours and wound up leaving it in the white for the time being. That configuration is the largest that will fit in the boxes that are used to restrict the size of the undercover guns. It has been used to win three UC matched by two shooters to date.
