Why? Has it been altered for them? It did not leave the factory needing the clips. Kyle

I believe that model is factory cut for moon clips; however, they're not necessary for the revolver to function -- you can shoot it with or without them.

If you look up the gun at S&W under performance center it said. Cut for full moon clips.

The various versions of the 627 are chambered for .357/.38. They are not normally made for moonclip use, although the cylinders can be machined to take them. The PC model has an added compensator and is cut for moonclips; it can be used with or without the moonclips.
A preferable solution for a revolver to compete in minor power, 8 shot, with moonclips is the new 929, chambered for 9mm and cut for mooncllips. It loads much faster than using moonclips on a .38.

That means "can." I'd buy a gross. Moon clips are a lot of fun . . .

As Muss said, load up. There's no faster load/unload for a revolver, and all your empties stay in one place.

I can tell you that this afternoon at the range with my 627 and 327 the moonclips made for quick and easy reloads with gloves on as it was around 27 degrees here. Does not have to have them but they sure is nice!

Moons are required in the 929. Without them, the cartridges drop too far into the chamber to be reached by the firing pin. I assume the extra long chambers are there to allow crud to build up and not affect functioning, but I don't know for sure. It may also be that length to allow 9x21 or 9x23 to work in the gun. I haven't confirmed that, either.

Mooncllips are optional on this model. It should have left the factory with 3 of them. It was designed to work perfectly either way.

What do you mean, left factory with 3? Moonclips? I got the gun new and no moonclips in box. Also my gun has wooden handle but when you look up the gun on S&W it shows blk grips?

To confirm, we're talking about this model: Product: Model 627
It's factory cut for moon clips. You do not have to use the the moon clips for the revolver to function properly.
There should have been three moon clips that came with the new revolver; look under the foam padding, sometimes things slip under there. If you're certain no moon clips shipped with the revolver, contact S&W.
The grips in the picture on the S&W website and your grips are the same -- Eagle Secret Service grips -- yours are just a lighter shade of wood.

Hapworth is correct, the grips on the website are just dark colored wood. If your gun didn't come with moonclips, you should give S&W a call. But until then shoot without them, its designed for it.
