As D VADER stated.
As far as value, from what I have seen, the aluminum cylinder ones do not bring the price that the steel cylinder models do. It still concerns some people.

I am about to buy a Mod. 617 10 shot with aluminum cylinder locally from an individual.
The only information that I have found is in the Sapica & Nahas book. It said that they were only made for about one year & were changed to stainless because of poor sales. There is no mention of any problems, mechanical or otherwise, just sales.
Is this a sleeper like the 1950 M&P, Mod. 58, K-32's ect were? I have never seen one at gunshows, gunshops or on the internet.
My question is, does anyone else know of one for sale, sold or in a collection?
Thanks, Art

Been one for sale here locally in NC for a few months now as NIB with box, papers, etc for about $450 OTD. This is the only one of the alum. cyl. 617's I've seen for sale.
Hope this helps. Ed.

I think that you are right about people having concerns about the alum. cylinder. Several people that I have ask about them told me they wouldn't buy one with an alum. cylinder.
They do look different. Thanks for your post.

I had a 17-8 with the alloy cylinder. It leaded up like crazy, very difficult extraction and even more difficult to clean all the leading off of because you couldn't be too aggressive with the alloy. I sent it back within 2 weeks to the S&W PC to have a 6-shot SS cylinder fitted.
Some people have them and like them and have no problems. I'll never have another alloy one in .22LR (well, unless it's an exceptional deal like that 17-8 was, then I can afford to have it fixed!)

VA doublegunner, I assume that yours was blue (Mod.17) not stainless (Mod.617). I didn't know that they made a Mod. 17 with alum. cylinder.
Does the 17-8 have an internal lock? Is it 6 shot or 10 shot?
Thanks for your reply. It's the first report of trouble that I have heard.
Anyone else had trouble with the aluminum cylinder guns? I would like to hear about it.
Thanks, Art

The 17-8 has the alum. cylinder but no lock also had a matte finish instead of a high polish blue. I had one of them, it seemed to shoot okay but I just couldn't warm up to it. Dad has one that is a 617 with the alum cylinder but it has a 4 inch barrel which I have never seen before. Its still layin in the safe unfired though.

I've acquired a 617-2 not long ago, s/n CBF31xx. It was plenty dirty when I got it, but it cleaned up pretty well. There are dark spots on the face of the alloy cylinder which I *think* I can get out, but I haven't really tried.
It shoots alright, not as well as my K22 or my model 41. I have only put 350 rounds through it, so we may accommodate to each other. But as is, it's a nice plinker and the ten round cylinder is a hoot with anyone who picks it up.
My K22 is much harder to keep clean. The cylinders clog up in that gun after only three firings. I bring a short brush whenever I shoot that gun, because you have to clean the cylinders every three (by six) rounds.
That's true for CCI SV and Fed. GMT.
The 617 on the other hand stays loosey goosey, no troubles.
The alloy does look weird. A stainless cylinder would look way better.
I'll shoot it till it pukes, then maybe think about a stainless cylinder. Meantime, other than looks, it's fine by me.

Are either or both of these 10 shot guns?
Thanks, Art
