That's an Ahrends Retro Target in cocobolo. I replaced it with the PC Shop N-frame grip, S&W Accessories #414170000 ~$50 + s/t + s/h, Friday - the Retro Targets are headed to my 4" 629 - a dedicated wimpy .44 Magnum.Special/Russian launcher. Here my pair of PC627 UDR's are now:
Since the PC627 UDR is a 'snubby', I thought it needed smaller grips - the Retro's were great - these are, too.

Ahh, my favorite S&W revolver topic. Here are my few:

Here's my 29-4 Unfluted 3" gun. No box or paperwork, but it is in real nice shape. It has been magnaported. Was this ever an option? Could a Factory letter verify this type of information? Thank you.

My SCSW (1996 edition) lists a 29-4 3" unfluted special run
that looks to be your weapon. Product code 101251. 3200 manufactured
in 1989. No mention of Magnaporting.
And, yes, the factory could give you the whole story.

Here is my newest Smith I have not yet fired, but I`ve got a bunch of powder puff loads and as soon as the mud dries enough I`m off to my range.
It is a 629-2e ser# bee 52xx, does anyone know any thing about it? I`d be grateful for any info you might care to share.

Hi Roundgunner,
Why did you have to cut down the grips ,and did you have any trouble?
I may need to cut mine and any helpful hints are much appreciated. I`d hate to mess up those costly grips.

Nemo; The grips are the ones that came from the factory, and only for pictures. I shoot it with Pachmayers due to the wood being a little painful from the 44 mag recoil. The top rear of the grips are narrow and I think they would be more comfortable if this area had more surface. S&W lists these grips on their web site.

Jack,
The shape of the N frame hog hunter CT grips have a point that prints bad when carrying concealed. I cut as much as I could without cutting the switch.
I keep asking them for a N frame concealed with rubber like the one for K+L frames.
They don't seem to like the small Ns like we do

AS rule, I don't care all much for engraving, but that is very tastefully done. It's not too 'pretty' to shoot it.

When I purchased this revolver a few years back it was a real beater. I sent it off to Dave Sams. He reworked the entire revolver, and made it right. It was then refinished by Mag-Na-Port. The guy I purchased it from could only tell me that he inherited from his Uncle. A quote from the seller "My uncle inherited the gun when a friend of his died several years ago. His friend was a WWII vet that repaired guns and tried to get them into the hands of the french resistance."
Per Roy Jinks the revolver was shipped October, 1918.

OOOOOOOhh, I want me that.
I just added something to my list. I want mine to be flat Parked though and when I bob the hammer Im gonna go all the way down so its flush with the frame. The fitz special makes me a little nervous.
That would be a great project.
