Default Model 64-6 New Style Extractor- Need Help!

I have a Model 64-6 with the new style extractor. The timing was slow on one of the charge holes and the cylinder was beat up. So, genius that I am, I decided to buy a new cylinder and extractor.

Well, the new extractor isn't the drop in part that I had hoped for.

The cylinder turns as expected. The cylinder stop locks in the cylinder, but the action stops there! The hand is blocked from moving further up by a "pie shaped" sliver of the lug that extends beyond the frame into the path of the hand. In this picture I've tried to "blacken" the section that extends into the frame stopping the hand. its about a 1/32". This happens with each lug.

I have three questions.

1) Is there something wrong with the Extractor? Like it wasn't milled correctly?

2) Are the new style extractors parts that are supposed to be hand fitted? The other new style extractors that I have seem to just be milled, i.e. no hand filing. And the lugs measure about 1/32' narrower.

3) Any help?

Jay

all extractor stars are hand fitted, they use a special cutter through the frame window (where the hand protrudes) to cut the ratchets on the extractor star. Nothing wrong with your extractor but it needs to be fitted to your hand.

Thank you for this information! Sounds like way too much of a job for a guy like me who didn't know it had to be done in the first place and has nothing more that a Dremel to do it with!

Sounds like a job for Smith & Wesson!

Does anyone know the reasoning behind the new extractor shape? Is it supposed to be stronger? Is it easier (cheaper) to fit? Does it improve extraction? Just looking at it (and having to deal with one on my Project 616) I just can’t see the logic. What am I missing?

The "new" extractor is cheaper for S&W to manufacture.
That's the primary reason for its existence.

There is some benefit in not having pins to get bent, but the main reason is cheaper.
