i had one when they came out in 94 , distibuted by rsr . 3" s.s. 44 mag rb . when i tried to sell it no one believed me that it was marketed as a " backpacker " . Til i showed them the box . at he time I sold it there was only 1 book on S&W that showed it . all it said was " backpacker " 1994 , rsr . I am wondering does anyone out there have one and do you know of a total amount that was made ? and I don't mean the revolver with the bear prints on it .

I'm thinking this is one.
It's a 629-4 which puts it around the age you're talking about.
Sorry, no box or info as to how many were mfg.

Here is one that I put the factory combats on. It sees regular service when I'm out roaming the hills:

And here is the original ad:

Zippy

I used to have a Backpacker, then sold it, not realizing the true value. I let it go about four years ago for 450. I just recently found one on a local sales network, and jumped on it. It is currently at Smith and Wesson getting some repairs on the lockwork. I started a thread a while back, but no one seems to know how many of these were made. Maybe I should get a letter.

I am going to post some photos in the next few days, because I am puzzled. I bought mine before 94 and it was around 85-89. My dealer told me it was rare and only a limited run. Mine looks like the photograph of the bright stainless steel one above. I do have the box. I used it in my work. Lets figure some things out. It does have a good story with it also. It will be a couple of days to work photograps out and such.

I've wondered whether mine is a "Backpacker" also.

I bought this 629-4 3" a few years ago - before I knew what a Backpacker was. No box or paperwork so I had no way to track it except thru the serial number. I haven't gotten around to that yet.
This will be the one I'll be taking to Glacier Park this summer.
