Any chance of a sight photograph? Where did you get the "clips" and the rubber grips?

I am new to the S&W .22LR, having finally let the new 4" 617 10-shooter win the battle here over the 5" 63 in early September. I replaced the leaf spring with a Wolff standard power and the strain screw with a socket headed set screw for 'fine tuning'. The result was a fine trigger. I still longed for the 5" 63. Then, a friend bought one!

I got to shoot his a week or so back - nice! Yeah, it's a J-frame with that coil spring - feels different, for sure. The trigger hadn't worn-in, so it still wasn't as smooth as it will be - still nice, however, if a bit stiff. The sights look similar to the 617 - black on black. The front is a ramp, however, while the 617 is a Patridge. Both are pinned, so changing them is possible (My 617 has a HiViz in it's future.). The biggest deal killer, to me, was the grip - it felt small in the store - and aftermarket wood choices, a la Ahrends, just aren't there - everyone makes smaller grips for J-frames. Shooting the 63 proved to be different - for my medium+ hands.

My friend is a small guy - bought the 63 because it 'fits him'. He now wishes, like I do re my 617, that he had bought it sooner. They really are fun to pop away with - no recoil, etc. I picked his 63 up off the bench, loaded it with the el-cheapo $13.47/550 Feds from Wally World, and popped away. Shooting it, you don't notice that 'smallish' grip. It's probably due to the lacking of recoil - and the tighter pull on the heavier trigger. I did note the ten plus ounce difference in weight - it was seemingly all out front in the shorter barrel, but full-lugged, 617. To be blunt, the 5" 63 points very naturally - more so than my 4" 617. I'd love to have one. It's still on my list. Sadly, I've sold/traded all of my Rugers away, so pistola dollars are limited now. I predict I'll be at my pusher's to drool over one again today - with my plastic - in case I go crazy!

Stainz

PS No help in my original decision, the new 5" 63 was only $20-$30 cheaper than the new 617s.

Hey Stainz,

I feel your pain LOL. We talked about this on another forum too. I have a new 617 like yours but that little 63 keeps calling. I may sell my Ruger SS Conv. to make room in my safe. I just knew the 63 would be a nice shooter and now you confirm it. Have to stay away from the pusher, er, dealer. Dennis228

Love that barrel with the ejector shroud. Need to get one and install on a pre-lock 63; maybe cut it down to 3, 3 1/2 or 4" while I'm at it.

Stainz, if you do buy a 63 5", try the Pachmayr Grippers. To me, Grippers were made for this revolver. No, they ain't pretty wood grips, but for targets/hunting, they are very effective.
