I am looking for a reputable smith that can convert revolver 648 in 22 Magnum to centerfire round like one of those variations of 22 Hornet. This conversion was done before, I have article in old NRA American Rifleman about it. Yes, I am aware of BFR in 22 Hornet, but this revolver is IMO just too big and too heavy for such round.

BTW, I am also looking for a smith that could convert semiauto 41 to exposed hammer. This conversion was also done by a well know knife maker. I even left a message to noted gentleman but he never replied. Many thanks, Onty.

Hey Onty
The caliber you are thinking about is know as the ".224 Harvey-Kay-Chuk". It is a 22 Hornet cut by .050" and blown out to a very sharp shoulder.

This was the predecessor of the S&W 22 Jet.

This gun is a pre model 17.

I imagine if he will do it, Hamilton Bowen would do an excellent job. He once told me that he had done this conversion, but did not like to do it. He would rather use a centerfire frame and install the barrel and cylinder you want. Probably makes more sense; a little more expensive, but tidier.

A Hornet cartridge is too long for the standard .22LR K-frame cylinder. Bob Snapp made a couple wildcats that work well but are not as hot as the .22 Jet. His rounds are called the .22 Long Snapper and (predictably) .22 Short Snapper.

Both of these rounds use the Hornet case, but considerably shortened. The Hornet's thick rim is no asset here. A better wildcat could be made using the new .327 case necked to .22 caliber. Someone will be along to do that soon, if it hasn't been done already.

If you could scan and email a copy of this article, I would be very interested and appreciative. I would like to know what the article said, if it dealt with the details of the conversion, rather than the finished product.

Marvellous work by any yardstick, who was the smith that had done this conversion? Is this yours? If so, I would like to know bit more about loads, accuracy and velocities you are getting

As for conversion using centerfire frame and 648 cylinder and barrel, I agree that this would be the easiest conversion, if not more cost effective because less work is required than converting rimfire frame. However, please bear in mind that I am located in Canada and for us to get any major firearm part is a big hassle; we have to get import permit, exporter (few dealerships have this licence) has to get export permit, quite a process. So from that point of view, for us up here would be far easier to convert 648.

As for the cartridge I would like to get something that would be equal to 22 Hornet. Actually, my ultimate wish is to have rifle and revolver in same calibre. I have in sight an older Brno 22 Hornet with collapsible peep sight that I would convert by shortening barrel from the back and re-chambering for a new cartridge. Personally, I do not like 22 Hornet case, it’s paper thin on mouth. I might be wrong but I am afraid that even 327 necked down might be a problem in revolver. However, formed case with reduced body on about 5/16” and rim to match bolt face as 22 Hornet. I was even thinking of using 30 Carbine and swaging it.. As for article, I have to dig magazine from my basement and as soon as I have it, will send it to you M29 and post it here. Thanks to all.
