PC M627 Models..... Bloodwork, Slender Slab, Hunter, Mondo Hunter
One of these days I'll find one of the hard-to-find 6" Slender Slab versions to go along with the other non-lock, non-VComp versions.
Fun shooters - all, but the 8 inch is a handful, works great with a very tall walking stick to help balance the weight....
Let's see your M627's of any vintage, regular production or PC....

SmithNut,
I have researched the 627 and have not been able to find a defintive answer to my question: Did S&W ever make an 8-shot 6" 627 with a full underlug without shaving the sides of the barrel (slabsided)
IF this model was made what is the product code? I have tried to look in the SCSW, but I could not find anything difinitive...
tnx.

opus1776,
The only 6" heavy barrel version (not counting the V-Comp units) that I'm aware of is the gun pictured in the above pic, second from top. I am assuming you are talking about the Hunter/Competitor profile as found on the M686, is that correct?

No they did not. Ive seen a few where competitors have put other barrels on their Model 627 but they were never a stock item.
When I was Rules Director for ICORE ( International Confederation Of Revolver Enthusiasts) we had a shooter show up at the IRC Championship with a 6 inch regular barrel. He was not allowed to shoot limited as the rules currently were. Since then rules were changed to allow replacement of any OEM barrel which allowed him to compete that year do to the special rule and a lot of people have done it since.

WOW smithnut. I love this site because I keep discovering new stuff. The fluted UDR is a beauty, but a 8-inch 627PC Hunter, wow, I have never seen one before nor did I know they existed. Do you know and can you share the product number for this variation?

mokuloa:
The 8 inch gun is one of two made with that barrel, so the PC didn't assign a new product code for it, they used the same product code as the 6 inch Hunter - 170095.
The gun above was made for Mr. Ernie Vadersen, who was the President of S&W Golf Company a few years ago. Ernie has some "one off" guns made for him, of which this is the last. I do not know what happened to the other 8" gun, or if it ever shipped outside the company. There is no way to check easily, since the serial number of Ernies guns all had his initials as the prefix.

627 is my favorite gun. As you can see from my avatar I like to play with it and add things like scopes, red dots or different sights. I now use Millet because they are easy to see.

Thanks for yet another great part of the whole story of the 627 smithnut. Color me green with envy. At least I know there is another one out there. That's 100% more then the X serial handmade PC 627 that I failed to bid on when it came up for auction a few years back. The only 8-shot on the old frame with the hammer mounted firing pin.

mokuloa,
While I can't help you with the other 8" gun, I can help you get an Ernie Vadersen (VDG - Vadersen Design Group) designed S&W 10 degree Driver.....

Amazing. I am trying to envision your display at a S&WCA meeting. The driver adds a fore-shooter to S&W line of 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 shooters.

I like my Hunter as well. I like it a lot. Like most Performance Center offerings, it is super accurate.
Though I have my eyes open for his bigger brother, I know the odds are slim, but one can hope.
Unlike Smithnut's version, my 627 Hunter came with an unfluted cylinder. I think we covered this some time ago that they were runs for different distributors.
I fell in love with the 8 shot concept back in 1997 when Lew Horton first announced the limited Performance Center run of only 300 pieces. I like serial numbers and really wanted #357 (bore diameter is an ongoing theme in my safe). Well I had to settle for #27 (top left of photo).
When Horton announced the second run of 300 pieces, they shipped me #357 (top right of above photo).
I am going to include the carbon steel, 8 shot, model 27s that were first introduced in 2000. I know you said 627s, but they are 8 shot. Obviously the middle guns in the photograph are the carbon steel variants. 4" and 6 1/2" were released as Bangor's Exclusives. 3 1/2" and 5" were supposed to follow the next year but never did. So there was just the one 5" prototype that was built in 1999 all by his lonesome.
It was not until 2007 when Lew Horton brought out the Registered Magnums that the additional barrel lengths were offered (blue and nickel).
Then there are the lightweight Scandium 327s. The 327 Carry and 327JM. I have not photographed my 327NG yet.

Hound, on your WISCHO 627-2, is it product code 11030? And does it read "627 Target Champion" on the other side of the Barrel? or perhaps "Magnum Champion," product code 101025?

Hound: I have not seen a 627-2 here on the forum in a long time. Is yours a 6 shot 6 inch gun? What do you know about them? I once saw one advertised as one of 125 made for stocking dealers, but never knew if that was really accurate or not. Mine do not have special marking on the barrels as was suggested in an earlier post.

Here is number 100 of 200 made. It has a Ti cylinder and a double action only pull of less than 5 lbs. Randy Lee of Apex Tactical did the work. An amazing gun. A close friend bought it from me so I still get to shoot it.

festus1,
That is a nice wheel gun. Did it ship with the Ti cylinder or did Apex fit that for you?

festus1,
I think that's the model/variation I'm looking for, but IIRC it was originally shipped with a stainless cylinder, correct?
Would you be so kind to post the product code and/or the serial number prefix?
Cool.... Maybe now I have a starting point for my search, the last reference available was on the Lew Horton website where they were selling his #1 guns, but it dissappeared before I was smart enough to write down the product code.

The Lew Horton 627-PC with the 6.5 inch contoured slabside barrel is product code 170102 and the serial prefix is JMSXXXX.

Thank you kindly....
Three questions...
1- It did have a stainless cylinder, right?
2- Have any pics?
3- Know of any that's avail?

Smithnut and colt_saa, the gun did come with a fluted stainless cylinder. Apex did all the work. I think mokuloa is right about the product code and the serial number JMS- is correct.
I'll look around later and see if I can find some pics before Apex worked on it. I know of three that changed hands in the last few years. I'd venture that most are in competitors' hands vs collectors' hands though.

mokuloa,
Thanks for the link, you had me going for a minute.
The $2587.50 for both guns seems almost reasonable.
Appreciate the info....

Mokuloa, On the left side of the barrel is "Smith & Wesson" in laser engraved cursive script. On the right side of the barrel is ".357 Magnum" in laser engraved cursive script. Product Code is 148218 and Special Order is 8016.
Nightowl, It is a 5" 6 shot.
It is supposedly 1 of 85 produced to ship to Wischo in Germany circa 1998.

Hound,
Thanks for taking the time to provide more info, much appreciated. I have a copy of the exact same gun. So now I have to ask, what led you to believe it was an export WISCHO model? Cause if yours is, so is mine.
This has turned out to be a great 627 thread. I may just have to post some pics.

Rex, That is the same gun that I refered you to at Coliseum Gun Shop. It was serial #1 from Lew Horton. I passed it up because I didn't know what it was at the time.

Hound: Interesting! I didn't know any 5" 627-2s were made. I knew that Smith made some 627's in the early '90's classic style, with 5" barrles and fluted 6 shot cylinders. I have missed out on purchasing one, but am still looking. My 627's are both 6 inch. Nice gun!

CS: They seem to be really great shooters! It probably has the floating hand, and if your double action is a little jerky, you might want to put in the regular hand. In all the guns I have handled witht he floating hand, the floating han replacement improved the double action smoothness. My sample is small, so my experience may not be the norm.

I am new to 627s, is it worth the extra money to get one of the PC models as opposed to the 627 Pro? I am an older plate and steel challenge shooter, not seriously competitive, just for fun at my club. And I do have to watch my pennies. Pros and Cons?

The only 627 worth owning is the 627-0. Not as nice as a P&R early model 27, but better than that "PC" stuff.

How can the most common variation of product code 101024 possibly be the only 627 worth owning?
What do you have against the other three engineering variations of 101024 that are all more rare than the -0? Say the no dash, -1 or -2?
Even though the -1 was the second most common of the 101024s I prefer it since it is already drilled and tapped for a scope mount should I choose to use one.

Absolutly YES
I like all of the 8 shot, 357 Magnum revolvers from the 27/327/627 family
The Performance Center models offer features and configurations that are not available on production guns.
The small price premium on these firearms is far less than if you took an existing revolver to a custom smith and had the work done after manufacturing
For plate shooting, you might look at the 327 TRR8. This revolver is built on a Scandium frame with a tensioned barrel. The Scandium sheds 10+ ounces off the Big N-frames weight and the tensioned barrel delivers that old Legendary Dan Wesson accuracy
As with any mechanical product, it is not possible to produce 100% perfect firearms 100% of the time no matter what the MSRP might be. There is always going to be a lemon now and then. You will often hear from a buyer that got one of the lemons and wants the whole world to know about it, in any thread they can find a listener.

I have to have my Buddy come bye and take some pics of my model 627-5" barrelled model in stainless. It has only a 4 digit serial no. on it which is hidden at the bottom of the cylinder strap. No other markings on this handgun then that.
