is this a two piece barrel or is that just the crown?

NO , that isn't a two piece, that is a removable front sight PC barrel.

can it be shortened by a gunsmith- the same sight reused......trying to make something close to a bloodwork revolver without spending so much.

mr.magnun,
Before going to that extreme, call the factory and ask customer service to look up the p/n for the barrel for product code 170133 (the pc for the M627 UDR). Once they have the p/n, ask them if any are in stock and how much they would be. Not sure if this will pan out, but sometimes they have barrels in stock and will sell them.

that was a no go...so the other question stands...if it can't be cut i won't be upset cause i still got a great revolver but what do you think.....is it feasible
