Default 66-6 Carry Comp Advice

I'm deployed to Iraq with the US Army, but right now I'm home on R&R leave. I made the rounds of my local gun shops in my home town of Spokane, WA today and found a 66-6 3" Carry Comp. I've always wanted one of these and had some money saved so I thought I'd see if I could make a deal. Asking price is $775 on consignment and the dealer thought the owner might go down to $725. Gun includes the PC case, a Biachi nylon holster, 1 set of wood grips and 3 sets of rubber grips, 2 50 rd boxes of WWB 357 mag and 1 50 rd box of Rem 125 gr 357 mag HP'S, and the owners manual. The cardboard sleeve or cover is gone as are the hang tags and warrenty card. Overall, the gun was tight with a real nice action. There were some light scratches and such so the gun has been carried and fired, so its not NIB. I'll have to pay tax on the purchase so out the door price would be about $790. So Is that a reasonable price?

It would be at the top end of what I'd be willing to pay. I think with the ammo and grips and since you've always wanted this particular gun I'd buy it at $725, they don't seem to be available on the open market that often.

I'm no expert, by any means, but PC guns are by nature rare. There are some exceptions, but if you are looking for a specific model that is no longer being made I'd buy it unless the price is outrageous. It may take years for you to find another one locally and there is no guarantee that it will be cheaper or in better shape. JMHO

I recommend buying it. I would also look for a good leather holster while you are there. I am at Camp Victory and got 2 model 66's waiting for me at my FFL in San Antonio. Plus, you have something to look forward to doing when you get redeployed (other than drinking, or chasing skirts!!). Thank you for your service, hurry back, the whole country is blowing away in the wind!!

Not talking price here, but gun. Thats a fine choice here. Can you take the gun to iraq? Now, if I was in iraq, I am just guessing, but isnt the possibilitys of haveing to defend yourself with a handgun there, the odds being much longer distances then here? Another consideration is ammo availability and caliber over there. Good luck, and thanks!

I don't think the troops are allowed to supply their own handguns these days. I always used to supply my own and use Uncle Sam's ammo, but that was another war.......

Let's see. In addition to a performance center gun, you're also getting 3 extra sets of grips (at least $20 each) plus 3 boxes of 357 ammo ($20-$30 each), the PC case AND a nylon holster ($15).

That sounds like a great deal to me!

No, it's not a reasonable price but it probably is the going price these days. The model 66's are very desired and the 3" barrel is the most desired of all. I am still looking for one. That is a choice piece and you likely won't find it cheaper anywhere.

Peyton beat me to it, but it can't be said enough: "Thank you for your service to our country. Stay safe, and come home (for demob) soon." I was a Viet Nam era vet and it was well over 20 years before anyone ever thanked me for serving. I've got my eye on a nice, used 3.0 inch Model 66, not a PC, no extras, and it's at $550.00 and climbing. If I were you, and I had the money, I'd jump on the deal cause it won't be there when you get back.

Best of luck,

Dave

I have a 66-6 carry comp that I managed to find new earlier this year at slightly over a grand and I think it was worth every penny. That and a 586 L comp are my favorite Smiths to shoot and are as accurate (for me) as my 19 6" and 6" Python.

I think that's pretty good price (of course everything outside of Cali sounds good to me price wise.) You will not see many of them for sale.

I cant second the THANK YOU enough! Cant you sent the bill to the damn VA for a model 66? If not we need to change that also. If you really want it as we all do then buy it and God Bless you! I have had my model 66 for almost 30 years and taught my boys how to shoot tennis with it. Kyle

Yep, stay safe over there and keep your head down. Whether you carry it over there or not, if it's something you've always wanted, "just do it". Later on, you'll be glad you did. Take it from a guy that's not bought what he wanted at the time, and then regretted it later.

Well, I went ahead and bought it yesterday afternoon. $788 out the door. Its not the most I've spent on a firearm, but the most I've spent on a handgun. The more I handle it the more I know I made the right decision. I almost bought a PC 625 4 yrs ago but by the time I came up with the $600 asking price the guns shop had sold it. I told myself I'd probably not see one again for a while so better pull the trigger now. It came with 2 boxes of Winchester WB 110 gr HPs and 1 box of Remington 125 gr HPs. The WWB stuff sells at Wal-Mart here for 27.99 + Tax a box so I also figured I was getting aout $90 in ammo.

As far as taking it to Iraq, we are not allowed personally owned weapons. That said, its easy to get them over but almost impossible to get them back. During my first tour in early 2004, I really considered sneaking my SP 101 and a box of 125 gr HPs over with me but decided I'd like to have that gun after I got home. I ultimatley confiscated a nice Browning HP in 9mm that I carried for almost 6 months before the 1st Cav made a big stink about packing non issued weapons. Kinda takes the fun out of the war, you know.
