340 PD No Lock?
Did they make a 340 PD w/o lock? All the ones I see for sale are the lock models?

I think they are all with lock. I neutered mine, but it came with a lock as well.

I believe they did make a pre-lock 340PD that was chambered in .38 Special +P. It was basically a 342PD, but marked 340. A forum member posted one (I'm 99% sure).

Not sure if this has been asked before, but in the states that require the lock, would it be illegal to remove the lock? I ask, because if you had to use it in defense and it was taken for holding, Im sure theyd look over the firearm and see that safety issue...
If there would be no consequence Im going to have it removed....

My 342Ti was made just before the lock but then again it's only a 38 Special.

I've been looking for a prelock and I found a 686-2 today and it followed me home..... a little heavy, but pretty!

No Lock 340 PD
I bought a no lock 340 PD Friday at a local gun shop in Illinois- brand new from the factory. Have not picked it up yet, but you know what it looks like.

i got a 340pd the first year, shortly after they became available, and it has a lock. if there were any (357) 340pds without the lock, it couldn't have been very many.
i do think they may have offered some without the lock in the last year or so. i haven't actually seen one, but i think i remember (it's bad getting old!) seeing an ad for them.

Just picked up a LNIB 340PD no lock that has a matching fired casing dated 12/2011 w/it. Other than that, nothing else togive away its age...

If you have the box, would you look to see what the S&W stock number is and post it. Other new no-lock models have a unique stock number compared to their lock model counterparts.

That is incorrect.
I just bought a brand new one, current production about 3 weeks ago. The S&W catalog # is 103061. You may have to tell your dealer which distributor to order it from like I did. Here's the distributor who overnighted mine to my dealer. They'll send you as many as you can pay for.
Smith and Wesson 340PD 357 Magnum | 38 Special - SM103061 - LIPSEYS.COM
Do not listen to naysayers who say they don't make them, even the customer service reps at Smith who often don't know. S&W has obviously gotten the message about the ILs and are quietly making popular revolvers without it. You just have to do a little homework; they aren't going to make a big announcement.
In the last couple of months I've bought a new 642, 442 and this 340PD all current production with no locks. There's no reason to settle or to take the IL off yourself.

Joni's post was in 2009, she was correct. The no-lock Centennials have been out for over a year now, there's many threads about them. Bud's has them.

Where or how do you find the S&W numbers for the ones without locks?

I looked at the original box that came with the gun and it is 103061 as well. According to the shop that I bought it from, it was a NIB gun in stock purchased by one of the workers a couple of months ago. The guy took it to the range, worked his way up to 357, got there, it hurt, he traded in the gun for something else
Seems like they are out there, you'll just have to hunt around I suppose...

That's nice that you got one without a lock. My post was correct when it was posted three (3) years ago and since then a lot of things have changed but sadly it seems a lot haven't.

Joni that was my bad for not looking at the date of your post and I apologize. I just wasn't thinking about a ghost thread popping up.
It probably wouldn't have helped me anyway if I had noticed, because I just got back into my guns a few months ago and until the didn't even realize the IL was an issue.

When I bought my 342ti in 1995, it was around $550, IIRC. So a price of 800 right now isn't so bad.
