Outlined below is my ideal Concealed Carry/Personal Defense revolver - arguably the best PD options maximzed for reliability. To my knowledge S & W has come close, but never offered such a revolver.

My chosen mode of carry is on-the-belt or ankle (on rare occasion pocket).

Caliber(s):

.38/.357 .41 .44/.44 Magnum .45

Frame:

K-Frame or L-Frame Steel (No light-weight alloys) – added weight assists with recoil control

Finish:

Unspecified; user's choice (limitless options with cost being only limiting factor) – assume standard blue

Sights:

Fixed
(Front) XS Sight Systems Big Dot with green tritium insert
(Rear) Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty fixed with green tritium inserts

Barrel:

3" unported with full underlug

Ejection Rod:

Full-length

Cylinder:

Fluted
4/1000 cylinder to forcing cone gap (a la PC TRR8 or 325 TR)
Charge holes - bright polished and chamfered

Hammer:

Bobbed with integral heavy-duty firing pin

Action:

Tuned for smoothness of pull
10 lb.
Double-Action Only (DAO)

Trigger:

Radiused and polished with over-travel stop

Grips:

Pachmayr Compac Custom (synthetic) or Eagle Secret Service (wood); user's choice - limitless options with cost being only limiting factor

I'd give it a miss because I'm not in favor of bobbed hammers/DAO, fancy tritium sights, or full lugs. I do like the notion of all steel, fixed sights, and hammer mounted firing pin.

No lock!

I like everything but DAO. While I shoot lots of DA I see no compelling reason to eliminate the option of SA.

Don't care for the DAO and fixed sights either - had to vote no.

I don't think you can squeeze a .44 or .45 chambering into a K-frame, so that limits you right there in some of your choices. The L-frame will take a .44 special, but I don't think there is enough steel either in the walls of a five-shot cylinder or in the forcing cone to handle .44 magnum pressures. The .45 chambering in an L-frame sounds marginal to me, if it is even doable.

You could probably get a gunsmith to modify a 696 for you and get pretty close to what you want. There would be more modification options for a .38/.357 of the sort that fills your specifications.

I probably would not buy what you describe if Smith decided to tool up and make it. I have both a 696 and a 296, and their characteristics kind of bracket the main points of your spec sheet. That's close enough for me.

I will not buy a new S&W that has the lock.

There are several that I would consider .... IF the lock disappeared. Especially in the Night Guard and Classic groupings. But, I WILL NOT buy any new S&W with their poorly designed lock !!!!!!!

ARE YOU LISTENING SMITH & WESSON ??? I doubt it !!

Don

No vote. No lock, no DAO, no full lug, and no night sights needed.

Night sights only last 10 years or so. None of my guns is anywhere near that new, so do not want a gun with an expiration date (or any of the other features I mentioned).

I voted no. I would want an updated I frame in 9x19, 2.5" barrel, brass bead front sight, shrouded hammer like the Bodyguard.

I have purchased many S&W's over the last few years but only bought 2 of them new. One was an M&P because it didn't have a magazine disconnect and a 442 because it was one of the new NO LOCK models. Get rid of the stupid lock and just throw a cable lock in the box to satisfy the liberals and lawyers.

No-don't like your sight choice and the bobbed hammer makes no sense in that frame size. A hammer spur allows you to yank a cylinder past a cratered/high primer. Otherwise, you're screwed.

It sounds to big to me. I like my 442 for the Pocket and I have several other 357s for IWB. Three of the 357s can be carried in the pocket of heavy Jeans if I feel the need.

Won't buy a new Smith because of the lock, that is how I deal with a company that won't support customers choice.
