I just purchased a S&W 627-0 that came with the rubber hogue S&W grips does anyone know what they came with from the factory. Heres a pic of the box.

Did they not come with the rubber S&W hogue like the 686&629 classic hunter

Not to my knowledge (a 1989 627-0 like yours). I've been drooling over these for years. Everyone that I've ever seen have always had Combats. There is another Forum member that just bought one with rubber and is also looking for wood. He started a similar thread and it has gotten same answers as I've given you.
The problem is that the Combats are nice grips and pretty valuable. People take them off a gun and keep them (or sell them separately) and then get rid of the gun.

The 627 no dash came with factory, finger-groove, combat grips for the round butt. I have 2 NIB with same. If your's came with something else, the grips were switched!

I just found a note in "the book" about some Lew Horton Distributed 627-2's (product code 149140) that had Houges. These were 11 years after your gun.
"They were thought to have been assembled from spare parts"

I bought mine in 1990, and it has the wooden fingergroove combat grips.

Later that same year I bought a 629 classic hunter, full lug barrel, unfluted cylinder.............****bber houges, but hey they had the S&W logo on 'um.

Does anyone know where there are original combat grips forsale. GB dont have any for a round butt that are good.

Here are some N Frame RB Combat grips.



Please note the pair on the left! These are different grain in the wood and they have a flatter profile to the sides. Also the "finger grooves" are not so deep or pronounced. Note there is a relief cutout on the right panel. I have found this style of combat grips on a 629 Classic DX, an early 610, and on a 627-0(which I sold - Dumb A^* attack). Can any of you add to this list? Are these grips specific to a time frame, model numbers, or just random use? My 629 Classic has a large logo on the right side however the 610 has nothing to warrant the relief cutout!

The ones on the right resemble the grain on the Combat grips I have on my 66 until I get a 617

TLR, here is a picture of a 627-0 with the original grips. N frame round fingergroove combats, satin finish , kind of flat on the sides.

Your date code on your box dates to 3 days after my gun.
My julian date is 9321, that is the 321st. day of 1989. Or November 1989.

It seems that everyone has different grips that theres 627 came with all combats though

I bought several sets of the flatter style with twin cutouts from the Hogue auction site a few years back. I was told by a fellow from Hogue that S&W commissioned their factory to produce N round combats for several Models including the 29/629 classics and magna classics.Hogue was selling off their factory seconds in an odds and ends listing that I just happened to stumble across.Most factory combats are made from Goncalo Alves however some were made from Morado.If I remember correctly the fellow at Hogue said that they produced some using Pau Ferro as well.Hope this helps.

From the hundreds of pictures I've seen on Google and Gunbroker, as well as my own gun, the 627-0 left the factory with the fatter glossy combat grips with a cutout only on the left side.

My 627-0 unfortunately also came with Hogues when I got it. After doing some research, I fount it was originally equipped with smooth combat grips. I also found these grips are expensive as hell. About half what I paid for the gun

Here is my 627-0. I believe it has the correct stocks on it. I refinished the stocks and replaced the front sight. Hope this helps.

I'm sure the OP has his answer however for the next guy here are two examples of factory RB N frame combats as they shipped on the 627-0.

Apparently, not ALL 686 Classic Hunters came with Hogues - here's a photo of the box label for my 686-3 Classic Hunter and one of the gun.





It would seem that these guns came with various stocks as I've read a lot of posts referring to other than the checkered targets that mine came with.

Since we're posting pics of our 627-0, here is mine

625smith, your 627-0 would have originally been delivered from Smith & Wesson with the "flat-sided N-frame combat grips"; however, the grips displayed in your picture are NOT those.

I actually find the standard N-frame round-butt combat grips, the grips you have on your gun, to be much more comfortable for ME, and far better for taming the recoil of your N-frame.

However, the set that you have on your revolver are NOT the correct "stocks" for your 627-0, IMHO.

Thanks for the correction I guess that Shooting4life, DR505, and onemanwolfpack have the wrong stocks on their 627-0s as well.

My product code 101024 happens to be a -1 engineering revision. Obviously the -0 is the most common 101024, with the -2 being the rarest.

However every 101024 I have ever seen regardless of engineering revision was shipped from the factory with round butt combat grips. Which exact variation of combat grip is the luck of the draw. The bulk of them that I have handled, had the ones pictured below.

How could you possibly know what grips his revolver was shipped with, unless you are the original retail purchaser.

The style of grips that are displayed on his revolver are the same style that my revolver shipped with. Am I wrong as well?

In a moment of 50+ confusion, I answered incorrectly...

The truer statement for me would have been that the "629 Classic" series revolvers, of the vintage variety, all shipped with the "flat-sided combat grips."

I confused the 629 with the 627-0 in my mind...

The 627-0's had the standard N- frame combats... (I should know, I actually have one of those 'Models of 1989.')

On reflection, I was completely wrong... Next time I will think MORE, and THEN type... My bad...
