Default Rear Sight Screw Stuck

I recently bought my 1st Smith revolver, a nice Model 34 w/ 4" barrel. However it came to me with the rear sight non functional (the seller must have forgot to mention that). Both the windage and elevation screws are stuck. I've been reading all I can on this forum and think I know how to fix or replace the sight but am concerned about breaking off the screw that attaches the sight body to the frame. I intend to wet the areas around the screw for a day or two with Kroil or Liquid Wrench before attempting to remove them.

Will either of these products damage the blueing?
Has anyone had better luck with other products?

Thanks for any help you can offer,

Welcome to the forum.

Use the Kroil, it's safe on bluing.

Before I'd removed the rear sight, I'd use the penetrating oil to try and free up the W&E adjustments. Let it soak and gently try working it back and forth with a proper fitting screwdriver.

Good advise, thanks. Why couldn't I have thought of that?

I had a stuck windage screw on a model 19 and used the method s&wchad described, It does work! Took a couple of days and soaking the site with penetrating oil. works perfect now!

Get yourself replacement screw(s) to reattach sight to frame from S&W. They look good and only cost about .52 each.

This is a great forum. Thanks to everyone who chimed in. I soaked the various screws several times a day with Kroil for about 3 days. Each day giving each screw a little twist without luck then on the following day it easily broke loose. You must be patient but Kroil works.
