I have a chance to buy an S&W 44-40 cylinder for my 2nd. Model H. E. in 44 Spl. The diameter of the 44 Spl. is 1.70" and the 44-40 is the same. The problem is in the length, the 44 Spl is 1.575" for my gun and the 44-40 cyl. is 1.559" , so there is quite a difference. I've checked the "book" and all the 44 spl guns have the same length cylinder. The cyl. comes with extractor and numbers in the 2nd. model sn range for those guns that were shipped in 44-40, but I can't get past the length.
Anyone care to chime in and help me out. Could there be that much manufacturing tolerance in these cylinders. Also would there be a problem with cyl. notches to lock up and the cylinder lug to keep the cylinder from sliding past that lug. I know someone on the forum has the answers. You guys always do.
Thanks
Bob
