Default Refinish Nickle Cylinder

S&W Model 19, 6", factory nickle. The cylinder has some nickle flaking between each flute and i would like to have it refinished. The rest is nearly 100%, so I'm thinking I would just re-do the cylinder.

I called around and nobody local any more that does that. I'd hate to send the whole gun back to S&W. I'm sure I could remove the cylinder myself.

Anybody have any links for a reliable refinisher? Or, is this just a dumb idea? Any ideas on cost involved?

If not going to the factory, try Ford's. They're excellent.

If you want it done right send it back to S&W and let them make the decision on whether to refinish the entire gun or just the cylinder. Since any M-19 is going to be a decade or so old, there is a good chance the entire gun will need refinishing if you really want it to match and look great.

Personally I wouldn't refurbish the whole revolver unless it's unavoidable and a necessity. It's only original once.

With that said, you can order a replacement nickel cylinder from S&W for $150. If you prefer to send the whole revolver to the factory for the cylinder swap, they get $60 for the labor and $14 for the return shipping. The cylinder swap is not a drop-in procedure and if you are not experienced in smithing, I'd suggest you reconsider DIY.
