Nickel vs cch
I am waiting to hear back on a trade and the hammer on the gun I want has been nickeled, where it was once color case hardened.
Do you think a simple nickel removal will restore the proper look, or are the colors going to be gone?

I am not sure but I believe the Colors will be gone. But, it depends on a number of things. How was the hammer prepped for plating? If it was polished or was abrasive blasted or chemically etched to insure adhesion of the nickel the colors will be gone. If they are still there under the nickel It also depends on how the nickel is removed. Reverse plating, maybe. Chemical removal maybe. Abrasive removal, definitely gone in my opinion.

I wouldn't ever bother to try. It's just easier and probably better to fit a new Case Colored Hardened one. Even if the Nickel were successfully removed I highly doubt the colors would remain intact.

The case colors will be gone. If those colors are important enough to you, fit or have fitted a new trigger and hammer. There is no other solution except stripping the nickle from your originals and having them re-case harden colored. That would be a rather expensive solution. .........

Prices I've seen for cch refinish run around $25 per each small piece. That's AFTER de-plating and any prep work. Most replacement hammers are relatively easy to find. What's it on? I'm sure one of us here has one.

Since this process isn't done very often, there is no way to know what you will end up with. Your best bet is to get a hammer that is in good condition and be prepared to refit it. That's not a difficult nor time consuming job. The odds that there will be any case colors left after removing the nickle are very bad. If electroless nickel the prep would have ruined them. If not the material that was put on prior to plating probably ruined them.

The gun in question was a pre 27 mfg in 1956.
The hammer being nickeled was a clue to what lay in store, but the pics didn't show anything that I could see.
Met the guy an hour ago and it was plain to see that it was refinished by the poor buffing done on both sides. The guy told me that he bought it from a cop that swore it had never been refinished and was his duty gun since he bought it new.
I showed him what I saw and he left a sadder but wiser man.
