Default Good Hammer and Punch Set

What’s a decent set of brass punches and a gunsmith hammer? Doesn’t need to be top of the line but don’t want cheap Chinese made junk. Just for occasional basic work. First thing I might use them for is to remove old night sights From a 5946 to have them relamped by Trijicon. Years ago I sent a Beretta PX4 Storm slide in and they did a great job. But the prospect of losing a slide in transit for a no longer produced gun doesn’t thrill me

I made mine at my local community college machine shop. Great fun, a bargain in price, and led to a great career for me by chance. Sign up for a night class, completing it will give you the run of the school shop usually.
Here's a pic of my old hammer i made at school and some punches and an allen key holder ive made since. The brass drift is just a section of rod of course, but it's been with me a while. Lots of fun.

Go on eBay and buy a gently used set of Starrett Punches - IMHO there is no better, period! For Smithing I use a small Ball Peen hammer, a small dead blow plastic faced hammer and a small Nylon tipped hammer all of which are available just about anywhere. You should look at Trust-Cook Hammers and they give us a 30% discount if memory serves. Look at the sticky's. They are 100% USA mad, reasonably priced and excellent!

When it comes to QUALITY tools for gun smithing or other uses, ebay can be your friend! I've bought brand new Snap-on tools at half price - and YES Snap-on WILL warranty them - don't let the Truck Guy's BS you! Starrett and Brown & Sharp's Machinists tools are IMHO far superior to any of the new production tools made for G'Sing these days. You can even buy Micrometers, Calipers, Gauges, etc for a fraction of the original price and many are in "as-new" or excellent shape at ridiculously low prices.

The new stuff sold at Brownell's and Midway & similar places are OK - But IMHO Starret is at the top of the heap!

Get a Brownell's catalog and never lack for quality gun tools again.

More punches than you could ever use: Punches at Brownells

I like the Starrett punches: STARRETT #565 PIN PUNCH SET | Brownells

I don't think I could live without my Brownells brass/nylon hammers. The 3/4 inch is very useful: BROWNELLS 3/4" NYLON/BRASS HAMMER | Brownells

To the best of my knowledge Shooboy is not making Hammers any longer. Tried to order one a few years ago and never heard back. If I am incorrect, please post info as I'd like one or two of them. Thanks! They look like real Gems!
