Default Broken Hammer Spur

I just purchased a nice old 4 screw K22 and after firing only 75 rounds the Hammer Spur broke off. My daughter was taking her turn admiring our new acquisition, and suddenly there was nothing to pull back against.

The guy I bought it from says just send it back, and he'll give me a refund, but there's the loss of transport both directions, loss of transfer fees, loss of North Carolina Sheriff's permit to purchase... and a whole lot of time invested.

I wrote the guy tonight and suggested that he would have to repair it or sell it as is... so he'd be out either way... and asked that he share the cost of replacement...

You can see from the photos that the break has been there for a while... only a small shiny break where it finally broke off.

Am I being unreasonable?

Not an unreasonable idea at all. A good used hammer is cheaper than one way shipping unless you're a FedEx employee or you have a FFL and can mail it. I'd post a WTB on the forum with a picture of the style hammer you want, like the pieces you've got. It's not a rare hammer.

95% of the time there is no problem in fitting it.

I would say if it broke on you after 75 rounds it's your loss. It would cost you less to replace the hammer than it would to ship it back and all the the other things you paid.

Man, you guys must have strong thumbs! (LOL). Sorry, couldn't resist.

That is a reasonable solution, and if the seller is OK with it, and if the gun is otherwise in great shape, it makes sense. I have to say, that's the first time I have seen that happen - must have been a defective forging from the get-go and it just let go on your watch. Not a real big deal as long as you can get the new part. If the seller goes for it, then consider yourself fortunate, because it was OK when you took receipt of the gun, and it did break when it was your property. I doubt he could have had any idea what was ahead.

Be happy if he buys you a hammer. Usually you have an X day "inspection period" then it's yours, "as is".

Well the guy who sold it to me has agreed to soften my repair bill by paying half... It will cost me $106 to have the factory replace it with a new .5" spur hammer. Woudn't have any narrower... This old K22 is a nice 4 screw, and should be properly repaired, and the trigger which is supreme should be the same after a trip to the factory.

Thank you all for your comments...

Regards

David
