semi bobbed job
I am interested in doing a semi bobbed hammer on my smith mod 58. I have done the full blown bobbed job a few times, but the ones I have seen and liked left enough of the hammer to be able to use it in a pinch.
What's the best method to get the desired results.

Dremel tool with cutoff disk.
Checkering the stub will give you some thumb purchase for cocking.
It might be a good idea to get a cosmetically challenged hammer to do the modifying. Save the original hammer to restore at a later time.

Thanks John
What equipment do you need to checker the stub? Would most gunsmith's be able to do it.
The semi bobbed hammer left maybe 1/4 of the checkered thumb pad. Anybody has any experience with this set up?

Sounds like how I did my 629. I left .250" of the checkered section, put a radius on the end and narrowed it to .340". Works good.

Needle or checkering file. Any gunsmith would be able to do it.

I used a dremmel with cutoff disck to semi-bob the hammer on my 360PD. I left one row of checkering and cut the spur there. That, coupled with the slight widening at the cuttoff point, gives me good purchase with my thumb yet is much less snag prone. Remember, one constant clean cut is what you want. Mark the cut line with masking tape to make it clearer. When done, smooth the sharp edges of the cut with a jewlers file and touch up with cold blue. You can even make a practice cut on the end of the spur if you want too.
