Fixed rear sight for a 629
I would really like a fixed rear sight for my 3" Model 629 Talo. The adjustable sight keeps shaking loose and why do I need an adjustable sight on a 3" barrel 44 Mag.
Anyone know a fixed sight that I could order and install myself ? Also, I should mention that I have no idea how to to that,

When I asked Smith and Wesson about the Extreme Duty Rear sight they sent me the following e-mail:

Sir
Unfortunately the Night Guard rear sight will not fit your 629.

Subject: Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty fixed rear sight on a 629
I prefer fixed sights on combat weapons and I was curious if it would be possible to replace the adjustable rear sight on my 3" model 629 Talo with the same Extreme Duty fixed rear sight found of your night guard models. If so, how much would it cost for the work?
Thanks for your great products

If the forward screw that hold the sight on keeps coming loose use some blue Loktite.

I do not understand the need to replace perfectly good adjustable sights with a C&S fixed sight. The Smith sight is actually very durable and will works very well. Anyway, each to his own. Cylinder and Slide makes on that you can replace your sight with, but if the front sight screw is coming loose, it will on the replacement sight too.

Its not actually the front sight screw that is loosening but the adjustable blade. After a box of ammo the rear sight is at its lowest position and I have to raise it again.

It sounds as if you may have a broken or weak spring inside the rear sight. Brownells has rebuild kits for the S&W sights but I don't know if it contains the spring. You could also possibly install a shim to fix the blade where you want it and hold it there. I agree with you that an adjustable sight on a 3 in. "business" gun is pretty unnecessary. Call Cyl. and Slide and tell them your problem - they may have dealt with this before. I actually carry a 696 .44 Spl. and have used it for several years with the front and rear sights removed. People laugh when they see it but by sighting down the barrel rib I can hit well enough at close range that I am confident with it. I figure it's a "in your face and about to have you for dinner" type of gun. Don't really need precision sights for that. Just out of curiousity what kind of loads are you running in that thing?

Thanks, for the info. I ordered the C&S sight set and I'll post a review when they arrive. I have shot everything from 165 grain 44 SPL loads to Corbon's 44 Magnum 300 grain Penetrator loads. But mostly I used standard 240 grain SJSP ammo.
Here is a video of myself shooting it with some of those Penetrator loads:

Interesting. First off, your shooting in the video is VERY nice. It didn't seem as if the recoil from the load fired in the video was extremely heavy but you can't really tell by looking. I noticed the recoil was causing you to reacquire your grip on each shot. I still wonder about the rear sight problem - if the loads (or some of them) are generating enough force to have damaged the rear sight or if it was defective before you ever fired it. Either way I applaud your choice of going to a fixed sight, I have considered doing that to all of my Smiths since I have long since stopped experimenting with varying loads. I would be kind of conservative running 300 gr. loads through a S&W - it will greatly accelerate wear on the whole gun. (and your wrist). If you are really that into heavy recoil (I am too) you should consider a Ruger and save the S&W for standard loads. A Ruger will tolerate that stuff much better than a S&W.

I don't often shot the Corbon loads through the Smith, its just a once and a while thing to get my recoil junkie fix. I find that when I shoot anything over 280 grain with the Smith that I have to adjust my grip after each shot with the original wood grips, they are too smooth, and they shift in my hand upon recoil. With the Hogue Monogrip installed this is not an issue, but the grip looks like crud (for the lack of a better word).
I do have a 7.5" Ruger Redhawk that I do shoot some Buffalo Bore 340 grain +P+ loads that approach a 454 Casull's energy level, now those are punishing:

Darn it!
I see you've already ordered your new rear sight. I just bought a 329 night guard and want to get the adjustable sight for the rear. It has the "extreme duty" fixed sight on it now and I would have been willing to trade. If you're interested in selling your adjustables please let me know in a pm. Thanks!

Thanks for the offer, but I wouldn't sell the original sight just in case I ever wanted to sell the gun. I don't see myself ever wanting to sell it, but you never know,
If I did, I'd want to sell it with all of the original parts.

I've only broken about....oh...10 or 12 of them in the last 35 years.
The C&S sight is also not sharp like the S&W rear. I've got them on several of my guns. Good stuff.

How's the aim on this now, did you have to replace the front sight? Looking at these rear sights for my 625 with 3" barrel. Same style front sight blade as yours, minus the insert.

It shoots a little low now and I adjust to lining up the shots to the bottom of the orange insert for POA shooting at 14 yards with standard magnum loads.
