Default Tips for carving grips

I’m looking for a little help with a wood carving project. I have acquired a very nice piece of black walnut that I would like to carve into a set of grips for one of my L frames (round butt). I have no idea where to start or if black walnut is even a good choice but I’m guessing that a few of you might be able help or at least point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

Black walnut is fine.
First step is to have to cut into two slabs, which need to be perfectly mated to each other.Second,I believe,is to router the outline of the frame into each one.I would suppose that clamping the two parts together would be next, followed by cutting the rough outline of the desired profile.I'm only relating what I think the process would be,haven't attempted it myself.
I think our resident master craftsman,Keith Brown, has some photos on here, which add clarity to the process.
Good luck with your project-I too, would like to make a set one day.
